Any tips on negotiating with dealers outside of my hometown? I've scoured the buying threads and have been watching prices for over a year, but it's time to buy!

My specific questions are about keeping an LC on the lot while I travel to inspect. Do I put down a refundable deposit and go see it or negotiate final price and make it contingent on final inspection? So far, I've found a 2016 CPO with 62k miles for $54,500. This truck is from a former rental fleet and has 2 owners. It's in the same state (TX), but 8-9 hours away.

I plan on asking for the CPO/PPI report and have downloaded the service history. It does have a lot of miles for 2016, but no worries if it's in good condition.

Thanks in advance.

Also found this 2017 with 19k miles at $65,000: Link

Thoughts on relative value of both? Seems kind of strange for a LC to be a rental vehicle fleet for the one above.

Negotiate a final price before you go and get it in writing, signed off on by the dealer. Once you get there, you have a LOT less negotiating power if you don' have THE price. Put down a few hundred deposit, communicate your travel plans well, make the final deal contingent on a personal inspection, and get that contingency in writing. I've purchased out of state, but I vet the dealer with lots of reviews research and do my due diligence on whether they are legit.

Don't buy a rental, unless they are paying you to take it off their hands.

Besides being ragged out, is there something specific to rental LCs that's bad? I get the concept, but what are the specifics?

I'm new to Land Cruisers so can't speak to LCs specifically. But do you want to own a car that has gone through years/thousands of miles of neglected ownership? Renters likely abused the car. The rental car companies likely abused the car. Like I said, if you get a killer deal, then consider it. But if not, why take the risk?

that 2016 is way over priced, most 2016's have between 30k and 40k. miles.
rentals are not treated very well.
if the vehicle has less than 36k miles you can buy an extended coverage for about $1000 to goes to 100k. there is a thread on here with a contact.
there can be issues with a cert vehicle expecially on wear items that are not covered. Best to check it well.
I truck I was buying remote.. I had the dealer take it to a near by mechanic at another dealer for a detailed inspection. (very detailed).

I get that, but 60k miles is nothing to me. What matters is the actual mechanical condition. If LCs can survive in 3rd world warzones, can't they survive the high end rental counter at Hertz? Of course, the price would be need to be right.

Willing to travel all over US for the right truck.

Where specifically is the 2016? I’m in Dallas and don’t mind having a look if relatively close by.

Yeah, but it's still a rental. People treat rental cars like shlt and do things like neutral drops before they return them.

Even if you get a deal on a rental, the resale value will always be lower because of the rental ownership,
so it should be a really good price.

What’s the difference between a rental car and an off-road truck?

Not. A. Thing.

Oh come on.

I wheel my truck.
But I also maintain it with care because it matters to me that it’s still viable YEARS from now.

Any vehicle driven by random people who don’t Care if it keeps running a week later means abuse happens.

There’s a huge difference between off-roading your truck...and not giving a crap if it lasts more than two or three days.

Renters have no reason to care about that.
Off-roaders have perhaps even more reasons than most to care about reliability. Not less.

Sorry, I guess not everyone knows the joke/saying.
The point is, rentals are driven like they were made to be taken off road and beaten.
