dam loading up the fj is like getting a humvee ready for mission - the ammo lol , but all packed be sides food ! ready for the trip to get bravo !
Got back from GA in the wee hours of the morning. It was a fun ride in the nearly 35y/o motorhome that I didn't know much about.
Had a vibration when we left, along with a lot of cold air coming in. Found that wheels weren't center and used spray foam to seal up lots of nooks and crannies.
Had a wiring issue the first night. The inverter cut off. When we finally stopped, found that the coach lights were dim and the blower on the furnace was barely running. Had to run a new signal wire to the solenoid that allows the connection and isolation of the coach battery with the alternator.
Have a bad dead spot in carb, probably acc pump. Just dealt with it for the trip.
Developed a ping in the mountains. Figured she was built for 85 octane so 87 was plenty, decided to retard timing until ping dropped out.
Furnace started acting like it was going to blow up. Had to pull it apart and knock all of the rust out of the exchanger and the gas line. One jet was completely plugged off. Worked good before we left, but the miles must have knocked old junk loose.
Lost a lot of oil. Maybe 1 qt every 100 miles. Saw a small drip under the rear main that wasn't there before, but can't imagine it loosing that much from such a small drip. No smoke either. When I parked it last night, found fresh, clean looking oil in the exhaust. I am guess that maybe there is an exhaust valve seal problem, or maybe PCV. No water use or oil in water and as I said, no smoke so hopefully nothing major.
Blew a brake line on I20 in an area that always seems to get me (lost a transmission last time I made the trip). The roadside service we bought gave us trouble so I limped it to a nearby OReilly and looked at their assortment of premade lines. Nothing fit, so I ended up buying one that was way too long right before they closed, then froze my ass off installing it in the parking lot.
All in all not too bad for this machine's first time out in a long time. It was about what I expected. Luckily, I carried a lot of tools and allotted plenty of time for the trip. 6.5 to 8.5 was the mileage we were getting. The old gal had plenty of power but seemed to suck the gas about the same, fast or slow, drafting or not, uphill or downhill. I am hoping I can get it up to the 8-10 range with some more maintenance.
We ate a lot of canned foods and slept at rest and truck stops to make up for the difference in money vs driving the van. When we got the motorhome parked and winterized, we packed everything in the van to make the last 30 miles to our house. With hardly any room to move, it made the motorhome seem that much nicer.
The MPG's aren't that out of line my Grandfather's new one with the 6.0 is making only 10 I'm glad to hear it got you home safe
