Well there you go, I just learned something!

That would be a perfect 80 IMHO. 1HD-T, H151, part time 4wd.

Do you know if it carried over the split case from the 60?

Here is one for sale. Very far from here.

I think that console would look OK in black/dark grey

What drove the decision for the H151 over the other 5 speeds?

We chose the H151 because it was available used from a guy in Cali. The only two manual transmissions that work in this application (1FZ and HF2AV) are the H150 and H151.

It is possible to powder coat plastic but I would recommend a vinyl dye first. The plastic fusion paint also works well and is incredibly durable. For color matching, test samples on the inside of the console before committing to covering the outside.

Mike now has his truck back, after many long months of fabricating and wrenching. I will attempt to document the process here :)

Before taking delivery of the truck in May, Mike and I organized the delivery of the transmission and related hardware last winter. In May, deconstruction began.

First, the aftermarket alarm had to be removed, then the console and shifters had to be removed:

First the transfercase was removed, then the automatic transmission:

After that, we had this:

We had the flywheel machined with a .020" step in it, as is required:

Parts flow in:

The first fitment of the transmission helps us determine how much to cut out of the transmission tunnel:

After that, I began creating the crossmember. The goals were twofold:

1. Leverage the factory frame mounts for the transmission crossmember, as the manual is 3" shorter than the automatic
2. Provide a transmission and transfer case skidplate (while you're in there, right?)

This ended up taking significantly longer than I wanted, but I am extremely proud of the final product:

Step #1 - draw some shapes on a sheet of 3/8" after using the factory crossmember as a template:

Step #2 - start cutting, then take pictures of the template:(plasma cutter is highly recommended)

Step #3 - get absorbed into the project

Step #4 - start forming, then test strength

Before being able to design the contours of the skid, we need to install the transmission and transfer. I caused a critical error at this point. The flywheel bolts for the manual transmission are different than the automatic.

Regardless, the project moved on:

Transmission ready:

Ok, now back to fabrication:

First fitment - not quite right:

I thought for sure this was the ticket:

Nope:

Ok, cut it apart, try again:

Looks pretty good, but it's too tight:

One more cut and adjust, then we're golden:

Time for that big transfer case section of the skid to have some support:

This is how she fits, with some countersunk fasteners so the bottom is smooth:

Painted and installed:

After discovering a rough noise with the clutch let out, I dropped the whole assembly again, only to find that I had used the wrong flywheel bolts. Fortunately nothing was damaged, so everything was reassembled with the correct fasteners:

Once corrected, I fitted up the transfer case shifter and finished the transmission tunnel panel:

She runs great down the highway :D

Huge thanks to @k4azy for his patience with this project. Now he has a truly unique FZJ80 :D

Can you elaborate more on the bolts. I am doing the swap on the 62 and the bolts from the 2f are to long. The bolt from the 3fe are right but they are different of what the toyota parts is calling for. I have read se eral threads and none of them mentioned the bolts. I notice that the head on the bolts for the manual transmission are like 4 mm deep and the one for the flex plate are about 6mm. Is that what messed you up? It was touching the clutch

What messed me up was not the height of the head, but the overall length of the bolt.

The flywheel bolts from the 2F should be the correct bolts. The crank is the same between the 3FE and 2F, so the 2F flywheel and 2F flywheel bolts should be correct.
