I'm now the proud owner of 2 broken 22RE motors. One in the truck, and one in the trunk of my commuter car. Off to a machine shop tomorrow to see about getting the crank fixed. I might do the whole bore, rings, pistons thing as well. Questions. Is it necessary? engine had good compression and excellent fuel efficiency until it blew a rod bearing. I'm looking to optimize fuel efficiency and durability. How many ks/miles might one expect out of a rebuild?

Unless the block is warped it doesn't need to be decked. Unless the cylinders are scratched it doesn't need to be bored. Just honed. With new rings and or pistons. Buy NPR brand. The wristpin bushings will probably be worn and those have to be pressed in to the rods at a machine shop.

Decking the cylinder head is optional but required if it's warped.

Also squirt penetrant oil into the intake and exhaust ports to see how bad the valves leak.

Best words of advice right here:
Do not buy any Chinese parts, like rock.
Use taiho bearings. Do not buy a rock head or valves. There are some Italian brands that don't suck.
