Teflon plumbing tape works well to seal the threads on the bleeder so no air enters there. You can just leave it when you're done.

While agreeing with everything everybody said about changing the old fluid, Griot's Garage has a "reverse bleeder" that pumps new fluid in from the wheel cylinder & allegedly forces the air bubbles out the top. Always room for something new.
