My front pass side wheel makes a kind of clicking sound at low speeds. I have checked the CV, checked for play in the wheel bearing and really can't find what it is. My outer Tie Rod end boot was torn off, so I replaced the tie rod and I still get the noise. I noticed there was no spring to hold the pads away from the rotor on that side, then today I checked the drivers side, the spring is there, but looks like part of it is missing, but still manages to apply some pressure. The pads are a little sloppy in there esp on the pass side, so I'm hoping the mystery is solved.

does it click when you apply the brakes lightly or only when your rolling? My LS430 actually has been clicking like this, I wonder if the noise is being caused by the same problem.

My right side (anti-squeel) spring broke sometime during the summer and it made a "slighty" grinding noise at very low speeds. Of course I did not know what it was at the time, but took the pieces of the spring out and all is OK. Left side does not even have a spring. Not sure it is really needed...

Mine clicks while rolling and if I touch the brakes it stops. I've tried shifting into neutral and it still makes the same noise. So I pulled off the pass side wheel and spun the rotor by hand. It's fairly obvious that my rotors are warped because at some positions the pads are tight and then at some positions they are loose. I'm fairly certain that my problem is this missing spring.

I had similar issues earlier this year. When I replaced the pads I bought a new hardware kit from NAPA. Only about $30-$40 if i recall correctly. Well worth the expense, very complete kit. Comes with all of the shims, clips and springs you will need.

Only one way to find out. Install the spring and see. Its there for a reason. The springs are too weak to push the pads back from the rotor. But they are strong enough to prevent clanging.

Yeah...the warped rotor is probably the real root of my issue. I need to do a serious brake job and repack the bearings. It's just the pads look pretty good so I was trying to wear the pads out a little more. I think I'll hit Napa for the kit, I need it whether I true the rotors or not. Thanks for all the advice.

been there. done that.

You'll be needing the heinously expensive Toyo brake clip/spring kit. (about $85).

My 1998 did exactly what you are describing. They even offer a factory mod (an additional spring clip) as the disks are so loose in the caliper, they can't help but click.

Once I replaced the worn kits, my noise was gone.

It was driving me nuts...

Which spring (and by that I mean clip) did you take out? Pad retainer or anti squeal clip. Or is it something completely different? I have a slow speed grind.

The anti-rattle springs are only a few bucks a pair. There is one for each front caliper (goes on the lower piston) whereas my 4runner has two (but no anti-squeal shims). The shim kits are like $45 or so for each axle.

My springs rusted into the pins. I bought a kit that included the springs, pins and shims at a parts dealer and it wasn't too expensive. Somewhere around $20 if I recall. Not all parts shops carried them though. I think it was a Wagner product.

So I finally ordered the front brake hardware kit from Rock Auto. It was sitting in my garage for a few weeks, but finally got around to installing the springs Friday and so far the noise seems gone. I had 2 symptoms, 1. when driving at low speeds I would hear this sort of clicking sound, touch the brakes and it would cease. 2. there are 3 speed humps to get into/out of my neighborhood and I would get a little clanging sound as I first hit them. Now with the springs installed I don't hear either noise anymore. I've been driving with the windows down all day yesterday and today just waiting for the noise and nothing! Those little spreader springs are definitely there for a reason.

I hope this works... It's exactly my issue down to the smallest detail.

FWIW, these were ~$5 for a pair, Carlson PN H4749:
