I have seen a few threads on replacing fj55 rockers with box tubing. Looking for more feedback from guys that have done this. My current ones are rocked damaged and figured I might as well go tubing. Detail pictures and tips would be nice. here are some pics of my poor rockers.

Purchase some rockers from @bobm , builds a super quality rocker that is thick enough to handle jacking up from. Would be less work to install something with factory dimensions than square tubing.

He's been a little under the weather so he's a touch behind though so be patient if you go that route.

I don't have pictures handy of mine(see link in my signature)

Mine were made out of thick wall 2x4" tubing with "sliders" welded to the tubing. And it is the welded sliders that is the real reason to go this route. The provide much better ground clearance than frame mounted ones.

In the past, I have seen 4x4 version also. But those are a bit "tall" for my taste.

The process for doing it is literally cutting the outside of the rocker flush with the bottom of the door while cutting the inside at the bottom of the rocker. Then trim the inside edge so it provides a good welding surface.

Not a "stock" looking solution but still looks good in my opinion.

I am not looking for stock in the slightest. It has a SBC, 5 speed. SO 2x4 it is. I figure might as well have sliders while replacing them. Not worried about resale. I will be buried in it or whatever family member that gets it in my will have to live with what he gets for it. I will haunt them for selling it.

I would go with a 3/16 wall 3X4 if I didn't use some of Bobs fine rockers- I say this having used 2X4 myself...

not 2x3, but 3x4 as opposed to a 2x4...the 4x4 is a bit tall, the 2x4 gives more room but isn't as stout, the 3x4 is a nice compromise...

my set-up uses a 2x4 and only goes to halfway back into the rear passenger rocker(cause that's where the cabin ends...) the orientation is fat way sideways; shortways up and down...imagine turning a floor joist sideways and adding an inch to its thickness

bobs rockers are super nice and will look super good and will also be a grat platform for some nerf bars as his rockers may look like pig rockers, but they are 1/8 or 3/16 wall, and their curve gives them rigidity...they should actually add value to your rig...

I did not realize Bob's were so stout. 3/8 is not bad at all and would take dedicated rock crawling to dent that. Still I had not thought of making them air tanks. I am considering going to ARB lockers. It would be nice to get some free air storage. How much volume are you getting? I am assuming enough for a tire air up right?

Volume expressed in cubic inches:

747.1872 ci for 6' of 1/8" wall of 3x4 for 2x4 it is 476.4672 ci

630.0 ci for 6' of of 1/4" wall of 3x4 for 2x4 it is 270.0 ci

Internal diameters are as follows:
2x4 @ 1/8" wall 1.76" x 3.76"
2x4 @ 3/16" wall 1.625" x 3.625"
2x4 @ 1/4" wall 1.5" x 3.5"

3x4 @ 1/8" wall 2.76" x 3.76"
