So in the last two weeks my 4runner's (95 3vze) Speedo has gone haywire...like it works, but bounces all over the place...like +/- 10mph...i'm assuming this is a loose ground on either the gauge itself out the sensor...has anybody had this problem and is able to tell me i'm completely wrong/ way it actually is; or if out is the ground on the sensor, where would I find said wire? Thanks y'all

Sounds like you need a new cable. That's what mine did on my mini before it finally quit working. When I swapped a 22RE in I used the cable and the cluster from the donor and it works fine.

I agree on the cable, if you have one. On some of the later models, they switched to a sensor.

Have Lowe look up what you got by your vin#. Then replace...

The parts stores all list electronic speed sensors for the '95. Take a look at any electrical connectors attached to your transmission and make sure they are clean and secure, and the wires aren't damaged. If you can identify the sensor where it mounts on the tranny, make sure that it is not loose.

If you don't have any other issues with your dash (like flickering lights, intermittent gauge readings, etc.) then I would put a bad ground low on the list of likely culprits - of course, anything's possible...

If the parts stores are inaccurate (like, there was a mid-year change) then check for the cable (flex shaft, actually) that the others mentioned. It could be loose, or it could be worn out. When the grease inside the cable housing gets old, they tend to "wobble" as you describe. If you're lucky, you can pull out the cable and grease it, but I don't know if Toyota cables are built to be serviced.

Good luck.

I have a sensor driven tachometer and it used to bounce. I never figured out why until the truck had a stalling problem. The electrical plugs going from the harness into the ignition coil were loose and dirty, water was corroding the connections. After I cleaned things up the tachometer stopped bouncing.

Different instrument but the symptom is similar, good luck

Also the speedometer sensor should be on the transfer case, not transmission.

It's got a cable according to the VIN.

Part# 83710-35490, fits VZN130 from 08-94 to 11-95. $81.52 MUD price and the warehouse has plenty in stock. :D

Thanks, I just had to remove it from the tranny cause I am replacing the clutch and the threading was loose so I think that just tightening it should help

Having problems with my 87 4runner. Won't downshift to first sometimes (auto) unless I shift it to L. Overdrive off light kept blinking. Finally figured out how to diagnose it. Says I have two bad speed sensors. Haynes manual doesn't tell me where they're located. Do you remember?
