So, went out today to start my rust inventory on the piggy. Started poking a bit around the seams of the roof to see how bad the bubbles are. It's bad, as in stick a fork in it bad. I started picking at what I thought was paint on the corner right rear passenger side to find out it was a bunch of fiberglass cloth covering a 3/4" by at least 2" hole in the side of the roof. I've searched for some solutions here but was wondering how successful anyone has been patching the roof with steel. Mostly I've read about chopping the top for a softtop (I do not want to do this-Oregon and soft tops don't mix, especially as a dd) or removing the roof entirely and welding on a good donor roof (I'm pretty sure this is above my skillset, with all the alignment that would be needed, that and I'm usually working on my piggy alone). The steel in the center seems fine, its just the vertical track around the rain gutters that I'm finding issues. Anyone had decent success welding in new metal?

replace steel with steel.........went through exactly the same as did K9crazy; nice fiberglass and bondo with some slick paint and then you realize that you love your pig too much to let it rot away.........have been considering a body transplant and a couple of members here have threads on the roof change procedure; Cruiser_guy and Arthog...........keep it as stock as practical...........my 0.02

i just took my roof off by drilling the hundred or so spot welds and then removing the leaded seam on a pillars, really only took about 1/2 day.

Putting another back on squarely shouldn't be a big problem.

I think on mine had I not gone this route, that within a few years I would have had lots of bubbles in paint similar to other rotting piggies.

In a dry climate or with a piggy seldom getting wet might not be mandatory. but where I live the roof will be slightly damp on the inner side from condensation all winter.

by taking off the roof the innerds can be PORed and preserved.

they are not making these anymore :),,,
no effort to save one will be wasted time
