I had to use my 4-wheel drive yesterday for the first time. I went rock climbing and someone put a new gate on the road to get there. The only way up was a 4-wheel drive trail that looked pretty hairy. It was steep with big deep washed-out ruts. I was a little nervous but the walk in would have been about a mile with 100 pounds of gear up the same steep road.

Ive taken it out on the beach in Pismo and it did great but I've never had the chance to see what it can do on a dirt trail.

I cant say enough...

Stock, no lift, no lockers but as solid as I could ask for. The gearing on these trucks is just perfect! I could not be any happier. It seemed to just crawl up the hill and over boulders effortlessly. Awesome!

Awesome!

Youve been bitten - here come the mods :D

Hopefully it was not a illegal bypass that some times happens around gates.
If a legal bypass, sounds fun

90% sure it was totally legal. It's been a public climbing place forever. The road always did lead down to some private property but then turned back up to a 4 wheel drive trail to the rock. A lot of people tended to park at the bottom where it turned up. I think whoever owned it didn't want people parking down there and leaving trash and stuff... which they always did.

The road I took just turned up a little sooner and it didn't really allow for a place to park.

This short trail did give me a different perspective tho...

I had wanted to do a 6" lift and matching larger tires. Realistically I won't do anything too hardcore when it comes to trails. Rarely tougher than what this was. I mostly want 4x4 for when I need it, like the other day, or maybe to get back somewhere and camp that is off the beaten path. I'll drive it on pavement about 90% of the time.

It did so well that I'm thinking maybe just a 3" lift and not as big tires. Maybe 6" and huge tires are overkill for what I'm looking for. I had a f250 with bigger tires I've had it on this same road before and it didn't do NEARLY as good.

6" is definitely overkill for an occasional dirt road rig, plus it will be vastly more expensive in either parts, or time fabricating and you'll have to regear to get anywhere.

Plus, you can fit some pretty good sized tires with a 3" lift. shucks, you can fit some pretty good sized tires with a stock rig if you're seeing mostly pavement!!

Very happy to hear your 'sold for life' LC experience! My LC never fails to surprise me with its ability:cheers:

I have done the 2.5 inch lift from OME and the ride is smooth comfortable. Need to put in the castor corrections but at the moment ride is nice. Got BFG's 31s and I got stuck bout two weeks ago on a trail 3/4 covered in snow and the little bit of the trail was a mix of dirt, sand & gravel. LOT of digging in the snow without a shovel. Talk bout up a creek.

Welcome to the LC side of things - it will get better & more expensive - just roll with it.

Check out the FOR setup for suspension/lift.
