Just a plug for the Red Cross - they need your blood badly right now (what else is new).

Many of you know that I donate platelets every two weeks at the Red Cross. It's a much longer process than whole blood donations and can be done more frequently. Whole blood can be donated only once every 56 days.

Even I'm getting slamed with emails from the Red Cross asking for donations or friends for donations. I've never seen an email blitz like this from the Red Cross before.

If you've ever considered being a blood donor, please, please do so now.

Thanks for reading!

Hey, I did my part. . .

Newport Lifeguards collected 202 units for the Red Cross this summer (a new record for us).

We hold two blood drives each summer and tried the apheresis machines; they just take so long that we had to turn people away. We can get more units without them even though they count double.

Its never too late to help! Give Life | American Red Cross

That's super Boyd!

Yep - tell me about the length of time. Blood less than an hour start to finish. Apheresis up to 2-3 hours depending on how many units you donate. On average, I arrive around 5. By the time we do the whole history thing, answer questions, etc and the actual donation time, I leave around 7:30. I donate 3 units each visit, so I average about 90 minutes with needle in arm. The average blood donation is around 10 minutes needle in arm. Huge difference! And worth every minute!!!

Brent, you are a good man for doing so. 2 weeks ago I went thru some badly needed blood transfusion under an emergency situation. I won't go into the details as to why, lest just say I am on high medical attention alert right now....
