Going up a steep hill under power suddenly my exhaust sounded terrible. Since the car is 33 yrs old figured the exhaust was rusting thru. Today I got under the car to assess the damage and to my surprise I was met with a dangling O2 sensor (upstream passenger) wrapped around the support for the running board and banging against the frame. The studs are intact though somewhat rusted and clogged with grime. No signs of the nuts. I placed the sensor back on the studs and and it sounds normal and all the rattles and bangs have gone away. What is curious shouldn't the engine warning light have come on. It's on for it's starting check only. Also, what size nuts does it take. Someone said M8 1.25 but they don't fit so I'm not sure if it's rust and needs to be rethreaded or find some other nuts. I'm planning on replacing the sensor as 2 weeks of exposure to PNW rain/mud I'm sure has rendered it unreliable. The car does seem sluggish and mileage sucks. The last time I remember replacing the sensors was 20-25 years ago so I feel new sensors warrented anyway if I can find them. Just curious about the light not reporting. Thanx for any replies.
