Hi guys!

Just bought me a new cruiser a couple of days ago, so now I´m a proud owner of a turboed BJ75 from 1988! The cruiser has hardly been driven the last four years except for when the previous owner used it while elk hunting once a year...'

I´ve started to get around to work on the little things he never attended too and it´s one thing that I can´t seem to figure out. When I turn the ignition key to the glow position everything in the dash lights up like it should but when I start her up the light for the charging and the lights for the diff locks "glows"?? They do not light up as intense as when just the ignition is on... Could it be some grounding point or something??

Any thougts on this??

I would check your grounds at each end of the battery cables. Does it have factory difflocks?

Hi Johan,

you should also check the alternator. It´s the same phenomenon if the coals or brushes are worn out.

Yes Rosco, it does have factory diff locks!
I had thougt about the alternator too just like you said KZJ77 and tomorrow I´ll hopefully have some time to check both the grounds and measure what kind of voltage the alternator is cranking out..

After work today I felt I needed a little light wheeling so I went to a place nearby where the army has built a track for their Hägglunds BV206 (Bandvagn 206 Bv206 SoldF.com) I´m putting up a picture that show were I started on the track

Got some freaky results today...

So I meassured the batteries with the car turned off and got 24,9V which dropped to 23,8V while glowing, when I started her up and revved a little bit I got 34,0V at 2000RPM and 28V at idle!

I´m thinking its the voltage regulator now so I´m gonna order a new one and check that out. I didn´t have time to check my ground connections today but since i dont think a bad ground would make my alternator crank out 34V I´m gonna change out the regulator and if the lights are still on inside the car I´ll check the grounds then..

Toyota wanted 350usd for the regulator so instead of buying a new one I fixed the one I had! Some fine grit sandpaper to make the contacts like new and a needlenose plier to bend the little thing the arm rests on have now given me 28V charging at both idle and higher revs! One problem solved, but the lights still stays on inside so I´m gonna go over all the ground points when I get a little time over and hope that´ll do the trick.
