I have a deal locked up for a low km BJ74 with 5 spd and the cable lockers. The truck is in great shape. What seems to be the market value for a truck like this? I've seen rediculously overpriced trucks and some that seem too cheap to be real. Just looking for real world opinions on their value.

i think you will find the prices on jdm's have come down ,how many kms ? i think alot of guys way over payed to bring in trucks with cable lockers and there fore want to see top dollar when they resell them . i looked at it this way how much would it cost me to have arb lockers put in a clean stock 74 and go from there .

more and more people seam to be selling thier rhd now that the noveltie has worn off .

I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-12K.

The prices on these are highly variable - just like any car or truck you would buy here that's not a JDM.

Without knowing what has been done to the truck, and exactly what options and features it has, it's impossible to come up with a price.

Cable locked BJ74s are all but impossible to find now in Japan - I know about it, as I've been actively looking for them. Also, the costs on the Japanese side of things has been going up. The Yen is up compared to the Canuck buck, and shipping prices have gone up. Compliance is costing more, not that a BJ74 needs all that much, but it is another thing to factor in.

For a clean and locked BJ74, in either 5 speed or automatic, the prices on this side of things will range from a very low price of perhaps $13K to upwards of $18 or $20K for a high auction grade truck with most of the common bells and whistles.

The higher prices also will reflect the maintenance package that any given importer has invested into the vehicle - and don't underestimate the value of this: I work on many JDMs at my shop, and many owners are sucked in by low prices on vehicles that have only -just- been complianced. They find out later that they need to invest $100s and even $1000s in bringing the maintenance up to scratch - and the seller has no responsibility to the owner at this point.

If you're looking for a truck that has lockers from the factory - and it's a clean one - get it! They are pretty uncommon, and they will hold their value well if you keep the rust gremlins at bay.

There are a few cheaper, non-locked BJ74s around - I think they generally represent good value, and you can add ARBs for a reasonable price.

In summary, I would have to say that you should pay what you feel is a comfortable price for any given truck. If you're not mechanically minded, get it checked out by an independent shop (independent from the seller or dealer), and be very aware that many (most all) of the JDMs that I have seen over the last couple of years have had cooling system issues, among other things (rusted brake rotors, seized calipers, dry knuckles etc).

Hope this helps...

As always, the devil is in the details. How clean is clean. Does it have a converter, stereo, LHD H4 headlights, modifications, suspension, brakes done, knuckles checked, all wheel bearings checked/repacked, side markers, injectors tipped, valve adjusted, new batteries, new coolant, pump adjusted...etc. Answers to these questions (and a host more) would give a proper feel for what value is.

I love it when someone tries to compare much of the JUNK that that has been brought over by individual people to some really good examples that have made it over. I don't think anything has worn off. I think individual people are bringing over low and middle road vehicles and flogging them. There is huge value in a middle/upper end clean truck that has all the little (and big) things done already. You get what you pay for. Wishing otherwise is just that.

That said, there are deals out there. You need to filter the truck through your own process.

Take two identical trucks, and imo add $4000.00 to $5000.00 the truck that has cable lockers. They are becoming unobtainium.

Oops... I meant 10-20K... John and Greg have a much better handle on this
Never mind :)

Like Greg B says you cannot compare, but people do. There still is a huge demand out there for good examples . There are ones out there for 10 and 12 not locked and details like AIR COND. not working or tranfer-case leaking or power widow (s) not working etc... Now I paid alot for mine compared to some of the examples out there , but everything was done or re-done, and in the end I am very happy. So follow Greg B or Radd Cruisers theory. My 2 pennies
