Just picked up my new USED by74 auto, no lockers. Great little rig and so much fun driving a shorty again.

My question to those with a auto, does it kick into overdrive just below 60KMH if you do are half or less throttle?

I have been shifting it down a gear when this happens, just seems to be lugging to low.

Hi Rob

nice wheels eh? got any piccies?

yeah that sounds about right, i need to be nearly full on the gas to keep it in 3rd anything over 60 km/h, then booorrrrrrrrrr when she drops into OD.. which is a big difference from 3rd
but you wil hear the torque converter working at these lower speeds often, and specially when reducing speed from say 80 to 60, the torque converter on mine likes to start working, im not keen on that.

keep her in 3rd until you get over 70+ keeps everything happy.

I still havent changed tranny fluid yet, but i imagine it would help it stay in a little longer.. it might need some adjustment or somethin..$$$$.. which im going to put off till it blows up, then get an extreme valve body kit in it.. which locks in 3rd and 4th.. but more $$

you LC sounds like mine.. nice!! i gotta PTO, but no lockers:doh:
rip out ya back midget seat too

cheers Iain

Thanks Iain, the midget seats actually fit my two little midgets perfect for now, just need some belts.

Been working on two tranny problems lately and was told by the tranny shop to keep the tranny cable fairly tight as this will help the tranny to shift even harder(really do not understand this).

Check throttle cable and kickdown adjustment yet. I adjusted throttle cable to spec and kickdown just a little tighter than spec. Did wonders for the auto in our 77.

Thanks guys, love the auto, prolly would not even buy another five speeder.

Will adjust the cable today and give a update tonight.

yeah luttuce know how the cable goes..
sounds a lot better that throwing coins at it

when i ripped out my seat, it had belts installed from the PO.. there were just 4x 8mm bolts through the floor, 2 in da middle and 1 out wide each side if that helps.. i dont have kids, just me dog:D

i think the auto takes some getting used to.. i went for a fang in my BJ40 last night (1B 4 spd).. and the difference in poke is massive with the manual box.. but not as much torque as th 74

but to answer your question again.. mine kicks into OD just a tickle over 60km/h

Iain

Mine will kick in below 60 with the right throttle.

Adjusted the throttle and kick down cable, what a difference, night and day how firm it shifts.

Both cables were very stretched.

Much agreed, next purchase will be a hzj73 with auto and maybe lockers.

After much reading I think a extreme valve body would be a big advantage running bigger boots.

Rob

I do like the autos much more, better gearing as well - you can actually cruiser at highway speeds and hear yourself think.

Cool.. i will have to get that adjustment made:)

Does anyone have the specs for these cables (sorry for the nubie Q)

Just for interest sake, i got a quote from wholesale autos today for their extreme valve body kit with 3rd and 4th lock up

"The Cost for the Change Over Extreme Valve Body is $795 inc gst plus $45 Postage & Handling.
Your old unit must be returned within 28 days at your own cost.
Comes with new oil filter, pan gasket, case - valve body seals and fitting instructions as well"

Their shop is in Victoria, East Oz, and quote is for kit to be posted to Western Oz.. in aussie dollars too

From what i gather this does not include the costs for removing the existing tranny, removing the valve body, and then getting it all put back..

yeah its sounds the good for big boots, and towing my boat..

cheers iain

Pics are slightly different from our truck. What he refers to as throttle cable, others call kickdown. Tighten accelerator cable amap without increasing rpm (engine running). Then adjust kickdown. My manual says 1-1.5mm from the end of the orange rubber boot to the stopper. I set it to about 3mm.

Play with it for a bit then sell it like the rest of them.

Just did a full service, fluids etc and it runs like a champ.

I like to put some miles on my rigs to make sure all is OK before selling them.

Rob

what plans do you have for your 74?

cheers
