so i'm doing the rear drums, and i can't figure out if i'm missing something or if they are just rusted on. needless to say i can get the drums off. any ideas? 1988 bj74,

Soak them in some rust desolver and soak some more.
Hit them with a rubber mallet all around and at the edge to move them.
I think there are some threaded holes on the drum you can put a bolt through and wind to push them off.
Iv never had to use them though.

Oh and make sure the adjustment and handbrake are wound right back
 
if the shoes wear into the drums they can leave a lip at the edge preventing easy removal. You need to slack off the brake shoe adjusters to remove the drums - requires two small-ish screwdrivers to do properly.

Also, many Toyota drums have a small threaded holes to install an 8x1.25 bolt to act to push the drums off.

Some of the drums are also retained by a philips head screw... seems obvious, but then again it's always funny to see someone trying to remove a drum with the handbrake engaged.
