If the vehicle was previously registered in another state, the process is much easier than the initial importation from another country (PinkLemon and Amauer's situation). Not that California will make it easy, but at least someone else has registered it in the US previously so that should not be part of your process with registering the HJ60.

thanks for the advice! do you possibly have any tips or recommendations for transferring the registration to california? (ex: vehicle emissions control label etc)

With my truck, a 1967 FJ45, I had to provide a valid title from the previous owner/state, which I had. I was required to have a VIN check by the CHP, and a weight certificate as it is a pickup and considered commercial. Those took time as the truck was essentially in bits and pieces when I bought it. There was actually no issue with the DMV regarding the truck being registered as a Diesel, perhaps since it was a 1975 or older vehicle. No DMV or CARB inspections whatsoever, and everything was handled at my local DMV. This was three years ago, so things could have changed since then.

I am dealing with this now. I have yet to go to the DMV for fear of getting my VIN in the system, but I just brought home a 1986 HJ60 from Vancouver. I feel I have the persistance to make it happen, but I am hesitant to begin the process. I am thinking I will just register it in AZ first for 6 months then transfer it over, do we have any first time registrations in CA from out of the country recently that can give feedback?
