I am trying to clean up a few of the niggling faults on my -71. The tach has worked intermittently for years and I have searched all the posts but have not found this specific problem. I disconnected the lower end of the cable at the bell housing to pull the cluster out. I believe that the problem is that the needle return spring overpowers the signal driving the rpm indication. If i tap on the top of the instrument panel while it is running it will indicate for a while but then it drops off again. It usually works when it is cold and then it drops to zero again. Does anybody have a fix? How does the teleflex cable rpm get converted to an electronic signal? The lighting on the left side of the cluster is also intermittent but not to the same degree.
