Bilstein 5100 rear shocks overextended?

There's a lot of good technical advice here suggesting it could be fine, but have you considered going with one of the other coil conversion kits that don't add any lift? Is it too late to return/ exchange the SSO kit?

I went with sso because it was the cheapest kit, $89 shipped or something, and I sourced stock top isolators and 4runner springs for $50 from a junk yard. This was months ago. I’m working on removing the 2 spacers currently and oh my gosh there is no way my bump stops actually work with these springs. Regardless of the .75” conversion I am miles away from touching the axle with the bump...using a jack, no wheels on rig, the springs are so stiff I can’t even get them to compress enough to use bump stops... I have a Wilco off-road hitch tire carrier and have a 5 person family, that’s why I went with a medium duty spring. It drove really nice with no weight I just am second guessing the shock length. I’m almost 100% positive they are too short looking into this.

@dms4ever what’s the distance from the Bottom of the bump stop to the axle? From the axle to the frame where the bum stop attaches?

when I was on tricked rear air springs, my stock oem rear bumpstops were 3” from tallest bottom of bump stop to the axle. And 7.25” from the frame to the axle.

i need to re-measure after the coil conversion to extended travel shocks and extended coils.

Any pictures? And did you measure mid hub to bottom of fender before the changes?

I’m sitting at 23.5” from hub to fender with the 18.5” free length Dobinsons springs.

@dsm4ever i just want to make sure you are not confusing the bumpstops with the isolators.

and you are talking about the 4.25” stock oem gx470 bumstops or the 4Runner 2” bumpstops?

The front end is on jack stands because ups hasn’t delivered my upper control arms yet, out for delivery so I’m getting the old ones off currently. I just measured the back center of hub to fender and I’m at like 25.5”. They are used 895 springs so it shouldn’t settle much. I don’t know what is going on with this thing.

4.25” gx bump stops, not the cones within the coil. 6.75” space between bump stop and top of axle just sitting here. Once the front is on I can flex it and take measurements

I can text photos but I’m not gonna hyperlink and all that right now... the stealth custom series br6 look good on this thing...

25.5” in the rear hub to fender is like a 4.5” lift!!!! You are way high.

i usually attach photos via phone using this site, but no worries. if you post pictures, others might chime in to help.

dude I don’t know what to say... hope it settles some how, or I’m gonna have to remove the rubber cone? Maybe switch the lower spring perch to a non sso one? Or do a softer spring? 895’s are only 2” lift.

Oh wow. I found this “measure” app on my iPhone and went outside to measure and it looks somewhat accurate.

If you are 25.5” hub to fender, you got major problems other than just the bumpstop. Your geometry is all screwed up at that height.

Something appears to be wrong, but I just don’t know. I hope others chime in.

take pictures of your install. I’ve seen others point out issues with the top or bottom of the springs

Wheels look awesome.

Yeah that’s what I’m hoping is happening and the jack stands are holding the weight up.

Also, how much added lift is the SSO coil base adding? Looks like an inch on the photo.

Sso advertises minimum .75”. Then they have these metal spacers to add in to correct drivers side lean with factory springs, or add both spacers for 1.25” lift total

The jack stands are creating a fulcrum and the weight of the engine is on the opposite side of the rear. Once it is all said and done, drive it and see where it lands. OME is shorter and stiffer than Dobinson's which will affect the ride but the final ride height should be 23.X". The Dobinsons spring is lighter so it has to be longer so it can settle to the same ride height.

Ups dropped off uca’s at 6pm. Went out to dinner and finished it up. Back is just under 24”. I’ll re measure when it’s settled in.

That seems about right because of the extra 0.75" from the SSO mount vs the MT that @HomersCanyonero and I are using.
