I have a Bent Up front bumper on the FJC. I love it, nice and sturdy, but the powder coat is s***.
After only three years, it looks like this. Paint is flaking, bubbling, and the bare metal is left to rust.
I can't seem to find Bent Up anymore, so he must be out of business, or has been absorbed by someone else.
Never the less. I need to address this problem. Its 1/4" thick steel, so structurally it not an issue yet, but it looks like crap. Short of pulling it off and paying a small fortune to have it stripped and re-done, what is a decent cure? I dont mind rattle-canning, after I have prepped it, but how do I "seal" the flaking edges so it wont come back too soon?

And yes, I am getting an alignment and new tires this week

If you want it done quick and cheap then buy satin rustoleum black rattle cans. Take a wire brush and clean off the flaking rust parts. If there are sharp edges where the powder coating was, sand them down a bit so the edges aren't as pronounced. Make sure you get all the flaky, bubbled parts exposed. Lightly sand the exposed rust spots to smooth out the texture. Do several light coats of rustoleum black over the whole bumper. Otherwise take it to MAACO and get the $99 bumper special

I have rattle canned my ARB (on the 100) more than a handful of times. I wasn't really impressed with the prep work or paint job they did from the factory. The underskin of the bumper has flaked away and rusted too.

It's on the list.

Sand + Prime + Rattle Can Paint = A happy bumper and owner, it's also cheap.

You could use POR 15 or another protective sealant. For me, I'd end up scratching that stuff off as well, so I'm sticking with the cheaper/easier route.

Is POR15 still not UV stable?

I second to wire wheel the fool out of the rust and scrape or flap wheel the powder coat back from the flaking edge until it seems sturdy. Then use some OrthoPhos or similar, prime and paint with raddle can. If Maaco has a $99 bumper special I would probably take them up on that, maybe just have them sand blast and you raddle can it.

1st I would get some new tires ;-)

then get that thing sandblasted or stripped to bare metal somehow...and either rattle can it (easy touch ups) or powder coat it.
If you leave that PC on there it will look like crap when you paint it. You will see ALL the edges.
So glad they dont salt roads here! Ill take my rock chips and busted windshields over rust any day!
