I think I'd agree with most here that doing the cheapest possible engine swap is probably not worth it. But...

Seems like one could do a 5.3 swap pretty cheap if you can find a good deal on an engine and transmission. For reference, I cut zero corners on a bone stock Geniii 5.3 vortec swap and it came out to $12k in parts. Here is my budget if you want to see where all the money went.

For example, skip the stainless exhaust and strip down the GM wiring harness yourself instead of buying a standalone and you could save ~$3k off my number right out of the gate.

Seems like these discussions are always easier with budgets and costs in mind.
