You might check the PCV valve between the carb and the block. Mine did that while I was driving it. It popped and stuttered for a second then started pouring white smoke out the exhaust. Ran fine, just smoked like you wouldn't believe. I took the PCV valve out and cleaned it with carb cleaner. Has been fine since.

There is a hose on mine that runs from the engine block on the passengers side, up and over the valve cover and connects to the base of the carb. I tried to attach a picture but am not sure if it worked or not. The PCV valve is located towards the bottom of the hose on the passengers side. I just removed it from the hose and sprayed it with carb cleaner. For some reason if that valve sticks it blows oil from the crank case straight into the carb causing excessive smoke. You can see the valve at the end of the red hose. My engine is just an "F" so I'm not sure if "2f" engines have that or not.
2F has the same valve only usually located a little further back on the block.

bought an engine!
goes in tomorrow, deal is if it works i pay for it. if after we get it(the new engine) in it aint any better than what i started w/then we call it even and we are back where we started

to do an update...
i rebuilt the motor... $$$$$$$
i cleaned up the frame, did rust removal then paint, i have pics but not on this computer
engine went back in today!!!!!! class starts tomorrow... my summer @ philmont was not productive at all and im ready to get back to work on the cruiser, as soon as she runs ill be slashing hte price on my jetta, i NEED to sell that thing...
i plan to DD the 40 until i can find an 80....
i love love love my 40 and i know ill miss it... but i need more space, and a more reliable comfortable highway worthy rig...
but before the 40 goes (probably next spring) i plan on getting her all fixed up and adding a tire swing & OEM soft top (i HATE my hardtop rattles tooooo much)

How come I havent seen it around town? Not driving it much? I keep looking to to see it so I can look her over. Hate your selling it.

i was gone all summer, and i havnt got her back together and running yet. hopefully another weekend or two and ill have her where she should be...

i am done dealing with Bell auto parts in tuscaloosa. they are really nice people, but not anyone i can rely on to get me the parts i need on time or at a comparable price, they lost my valve cover, have failed twice to order me the correct gaskets and are just pretty slow. i hate bashing local places, id rather have more local shops than have a large chain store... but my values only go as far as my patience, and wallet can allow. hopefully advance will be able to hook me up with the remaining gaskets that i need. Tuesday is my next opportunity to work on the Cruiser, and my last before my
comes for a visit. I really wanted to have the 40 up and running by the time she got here so we could cruiser around town during the first Alabama football game of the season, but its not looking good to be done with just one more day of work....
oh and it looks like my rustoleum paintjob maybe on the ropes already.
on the bright side, i did get a trailer though. so once the cruiser is going and the jetta is sold, ill start working on building a camp trailer!
