What was your speed indicator reading when you "spinned the knob" ?
I am going to take an educated guess that you were moving at a higher rate of speed than suggested.

It's normal if you try to do something that doesn't work - it will beep if you try to put it in low from any shifter position other than neutral, or if you shift out of neutral before the electronic transfer case has completed the transition from high to low.
