bearing pre load

I reassembled the gears and bearings, and I'm thinking something is wrong. There is considerable play from front to rear. In the photos you can see when i pull the shaft towards the rear, the gears seem to be aligned correctly. But when i push the shaft towards the front, the gears appear misaligned. If i use shims (speedo housing)to snug up the package they will push the gear assembly into the misalinged position. Any suggestions?

One follow-up question. Man-a-fre's rebuild kit #'s for the race and bearings in the photos aren't exactly the same? Original race #30307 new#30307J
original bearing # 303072 new # is installed but i know it is different. Parts appeared identical but should this be a concern?

that's usually just an issue of taper. as long as the bearing is made to go with the race, you should be good.

Thanks for that note, i put the cone together and forgot the old race in the cone. Though the old race would work, but your right, different tapers. Need new gasket.
