Which part of the coast?
I grew up on the southern coast.

Just south of the OR/CA boarder on Smith River is Jedediah SP which is just off the coast in a redwood grove.

Head north on 101 and there is a nice little hike in tent camp right on the beach, can't remember the name of that one.

Continue north and take a right up the Chetco River, there is a great campground right on the river.

Just north of Brookings is Harris State Beach Camp ground. A little north there is a private campground called Whales head, more oriented to RV's but they have nice facilities and private access under 101 to the beach. Clean showers and a laundry room, the resturant serves some fantastic seafood but it's more old school, heavy on fried stuff. I swear they put about 1/2 pound of bacon in every serving of green beans.

North of Gold Beach there is a neat campground called Humbug mountain. Don't miss the Prehistoric Gardens located nearby. I went there on field trips back in the 60's and it's still cool.
Around the Port Orford area there are places to primitive camp along the Elk River.

Based on growing up on the coast I prefer to camp inland a couple of miles, it's much more comfortable. The beach is either windy or damp or both.

Has anyone done any wheeling and camping at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area? Going to run the OBDR in August and was thinking of setting up camp there for a few days before heading out on route 6. Is it worth it?

Seems like one of the few places on the OR coast you might be able to camp on the beach/sand with your rig.

^ I've camped a bunch of times over the years at the Umpqua state camp ground (just south of Reedsport) at the yurts (though we 1. booked a year in advance and 2. went there during April school holidays). I'd guess the place is a LOT more popular in summer and during school hols.

Very unpopulated during the april trips, e.g.

Camping on sand/at beach is overrated, unless you like sand in everything :)

Haven't been up that way for about 7 years now, so hopefully it hasn't changed much (i.e. rules/restrictions etc).

cheers,
george.

Agree with George & Dan. But, I lived in Seaside for 6 yrs back in the 90s. Bad time of year to be on the coast. 101 will be a zoo and beaches & campgrounds likewise. At least the Northcoast...furthur South might be better. One things for sure - temps will be cooler than inland - but that's main reason it's crowded. But, hell - looks like you're from the Seattle area - you oughtta know better...lol
