changing to a new coil that needs a ballast resistor. My coil bracket doesn't have a 'mount' for it. Are there any special considerations for mounting the resistor?
wire length, heat, ........?

Wire length shouldn't matter as long as you use a decent gauge. The resistor should stand up from it's mount a bit so air can circulate under it. they do get quite hot.
