Today was the day to take off the Nokians and put on the ATs. The ATs were badly out of balance. After spending well over $300 for multiple balancings at Kal Tire in less than 8 months, I decided to give Off Road 4x4 in Abby a try. Went down there only to find the shop empty. WTH?

Not wanting to waste $$$ at Kal Tire again, I went up to Tire Craft and explained to the owner that evey time I got into the mud or a rutted road I was ripping off counter weights. They put on these stick on counter weights to the inner part of the rim. He said most people don't like the looks but they won't spin off in the ruts or mud and they balance very well. Okay they look like hell but I can handle the looks if they stay on. The other positive note was the the bill. It was also less than half of what Kal Tire charges: $15/tire. On the down side for some of you, the max size he will mount and balance is 33".

on larger sized tires i have heard of them being balanced in many ways....some guys put golf balls, ball bearings or there are special pellets that can be put in the tire for balancing, these all work or do like they do with tractor tires and they put a liquid in the tires. i cant atm remember what it is they put in the tires though....

many times if your balancing and it takes a lot of weight in one spot if they demounted the tire and turned it 180 degrees it would solve a lot of the problems. The rim will not be statically balanced and neither will the rubber. So it might take a turn here or there to make it closer so you don't need a 10 pound weight hanging on one side.

I literally have a weight on one of my tires that is 6 inches long. I did not know they made them that big. When I get my summers mounted I will be specifying to turn them a little.

I've heard of a powder product called "equal" I think that goes in the tire. For big tires.
