A 4:1 winch is the easy part. The hard part is the PTO. There's no way they'd be using any factory gear with anything as heavy as a Land Cruiser.

I'm running a huge hydraulic pump off my PTO and that runs my 8000 lb Superwinch. Its about 2/3 as fast as an 8274 unloaded and about 10 times as fast at full load.

what about mounting it on the front axle for a comp only vehicle. This way you could just put a chain drive off the front flange to the flange on the winch for power and use a clutch to engage the winch. I don't like the idea of a winch on the axle, but you would have full driveline power right there.

So I think I have a way to clutch it. Use an open diff and put a disk brake from something small on the non spool side. Then you engage the winch and all the power would run through the disc brake side and not pull any on the line. The power you send to the winch would be directly related to how much braking you do. Seems like a good way to control it and could be done on a low budget. Something like an e-brake with the cable run to a lever would work. I'm thinking this is only a comp type thing.
:idea:my thoughts exactly,i was thinkin of using a ifs minitruck front diff!!

lots of old cruisers have a mechanical winch connected to the engine... maybe you could use one of those

Many 40's and 60's have that .... it will lift you car straight off the ground .. or break the safety-pin

cruiser pto`s not strong enuff they are only factory rated to 1500kgs:confused:
im in the process of collecting bits for this, when i get everythin together i`ll post some pics, might have to extend my 40`s wheelbase to fit it under there:D:D
