DISCLAIMER; There will be some pics, not so much on the tech as I do more working than takings pictures.
So I used to spend every waking hour on here in the 80 section. Have had a quite a few Toyotas over the years. I had an FJ40, 85 SR5 Xtra cab, 89 4Runner, 94 FZJ80, and now this 87 4Runner.
After I sold my 80 in 2010 (regrettably) I kind of got out of wheeling due to some life issues that arose. Well a few months ago I decided I had been away from wheeling my own rig for too long, so I traded this truck for a 87 4Runner.
I have spent a lot of time on other forums, but came back here because I liked it so much when I was on here before. So I am back...
It was a 95 Powerstroke F-350. Wasn't a horrible truck just wasn't what I wanted. Had a mountain of CHEAP problems with it when I bought it (also for very cheap) and I started fixing it up to the above state. I traded it for an 87 4Runner that had some goodies and some problems.
When I got it, it was completely covered in Herculiner that had been slathered on.
Looked horrible. I took a grinder to the truck and took it down to bare metal like you see above.
The good:
4.88s
Detroit lockers f/r
Trail Gear front bumper
Softtopper soft top
Really nice interior
4" Pro Comp lift
33" Boggers
Simulock Wheels
Bad:
Rust (came from up north at some point)
Timing chain was rattling
Busted glass in hard top
Stupid Herculiner
Horrible Smittybuilt rear bumper
IFS
Dents!
Rattle canned it grey(ish) and sold the boggers and bought some BFG Mud Terrains with a lot of tread for only 50$ more than I sold the bald boggers for. Sold the Soft Topper for like 700$ and put the hard top back on.
So I took it out wheeling to Katemcy and Hidden falls just to see what it was like to be wheeling again!
Things I determined on wheeling it, it needed 5.29s, IFS sucks, s***ty Pro Comp springs and Auto Zone shackles don't flex at all.
So on wheeling with some guys at Hidden Falls I met a guy that wanted to upgrade to one tons so he asked me if I wanted to buy his axles. Upon talking to him I found out his axles had 5.29s, ARBs, hi pinion front, V6 rear, V6 calipers, vented LC rotors, armor and one Longfield 27 spline. He also said he would throw in ALL of his Toyota axle parts, so I got front shackles, shock hoops, extended brake lines, 2" wheel spacers, u-bolts and u-bolt plates, rear u-bolt flip kit, 3 extra birfs, one long shaft, one short shaft, 2 front drive shafts, PSC ram (nearly new), 2 4cyl thirds, 1 V6 third, tie rod with heims, draglink, one front axle housing with knuckles, an entire tote (full of bearings, complete knuckle rebuild kitS, ARB lines, ARB side collars, and a TON of other new stuff), AND an ARB compressor, wiring harness and switches. Probably forgetting some stuff but all for 1650$.
Buddy gave me a set of 63s with creeper joints and beefy 10" shackles (that I built for his truck before we linked it). Bought a set of stock rear springs for a 4runner to do RUF. A 4WD shop owner owed me some money so he bought me a Trail Gear dual case crossmember, a dual case adapter, and a set of 14" travel shocks. So far I am not into it much. Traded a set of new Warn locking hubs (got with the axles I bought) for a top shift case. I had most of what I needed to do a SAS and also dual cases. Also sold the BFGs I bought for 400$, for 500$ and then bought a set of nearly new 35" MTRs (never were on the street, supposedly belonged to the owner of K2).
So in the shop it went to go under the knife. Gears then solid axle.
To be Continued...

I'd like to do a similar build to my '86 mini someday.
