I should have worded that more carefully, I want to replace the Svea on short warm weather trips. The Svea will stay in my FJ40 camping kit. If you have ever camped out of an FJ40 you know space is at a premium, the Svea is perfect. Plus it uses the same fuel as the 40.:grinpimp:

My father has a couple Svea, pheobus and optimus stoves. I grew up backpacking with them. He has promised to give them to me for a while now. Unfortunately, they are buried in his house somewhere and he has not been able to find them.

I really want one to leave in the 60.

Or, to find another coleman single burner at a yardsale for 5 bucks :D

Here is a video with a pretty good looking lady using the Flash like I have. Boils what looks like 400-500ml in a minute.

Jet Boil should do themselves a favor and include some videos like that on their site. Watching that gave me a much better feel for the product than their site.

I did notice that the Flash is rated at 4,5000 BTU, considerably less than the others if you wanted to use the burner alone.

Cause physics gets in the way..

Single person backpacking and minimalistic approach, I'd still be looking long and hard at sterno/Alcohol stoves.

Zen Backpacking Stoves - Home of the Alcohol Stove

Mostly because of the price :D

Looks like the Esbit burner but with a cooler stand. Just under 6 oz and it looks like you can store fuel in the unit for transport. Almost pulled the trigger but shipping was $9 from Canada. It doesn't look like a $20 stove to me.

Your seriously complaining about shipping. The deals canadapost gives to us citizens is amazing, while the other direction we pay more.
The amount of s*** I get out of the states you learn what is fair and unfair really quick

I get a kick out of the jet boil guys, it's like a cock pushup with everyone saying well mine can do it faster or better.

....
I really wasn't complaining, I just refuse to pay as much for shipping as I'm paying for a product. No matter where it comes from. I'll find a local source or wait until Amazon runs a free shipping special. :meh:

Man, you may want to experiment with alcohol stoves for shorter warm weather trips. I have a pepsi can stove I love that I used when I did the colorado trail race on my mountain bike this summer and I really liked it.

I had an old MSR pocket Rocket that I liked and also a MSR wisperlight international. for warm weather trips, I figured out that the alcohol stove was way lighter (fuel, stove and pot) for 3 day or less stints. The pocket rocket (stove, fuel and pot) was lightest for 3-4 days, and for longer than 4 days, the Wisperlight was worth bringing because of it's fuel economy even with it's higher weight. This took into account fuel weight and boiling efficiency for 1 liter of water, twice a day. I did the experiment over years of travelling in the smokys in east Tn. at relatively low altitudes.

Anyways, I dig the pocket rocket, but now it has basically turned into an either bring the whisper light or alcohol stove kinda thing. this is wheter I am backpacking or driving.

I did 90% of the work to build a nice double wall alcohol stove today, just need to set up a jig and drill 16 holes to finish it. I'm thinking I'll try to build some kind of heat exchanger to go with it.

cool, I think you'll like it. Glad to hear you are making one :)

Most of the ones I have built work very well to boil about 1 liter with 1 oz of fuel. Usually there is plenty of burn time left after full boil actually. Boil time doesn't matter since I am normally setting up a tent while it is burning.

experimenting with it is half the fun. I have made like 4 different designs.

You guys like to build things???

Wow.. Who'd a thunked it...

I finished the stove yesterday, I may need to tweak the design a bit. I think I made the holes to big or made to many holes, I'm getting a yellow flame instead of blue. There might also have been some water trapped inside from when I wet sanded the paint off. It still boiled 500mL in about 4 min though.

The great thing it didn't cost a dime so I'm not out anything except an hour or so of my time.

BUMP

:D

My MSR Whisperlite's pump broke, again, so I'm looking for a replacement stove. mrs surfpig really really really wants the jetboil system, I'm still biased toward a liquid fuel system, like the MSR.

My backup stove is the venerable Optimus 8R.

Those plastic pumps are a weak link.. But I'm not aware of any good alternatives..
Does Cascade warranty the pumps at all? They were awesome when my 80's vintage whisperlite began to leak at the hose..

Awesome piece of equipment. This was from the beach on Saturday. Boils water within 2 min and super easy to set up and put away.

call me old fashioned, here is the one I have used for close to 25 years, now...course, it hasn't been on any walks in more than 10 of those....it does do regular duty as the coffee cooker tho.,...
