So I cleaned up my factory valves at the end of the axle tube breather lines and pulled the pressed cap off. Inside there is a spring and a rubber bit that makes a seal and acts as a 1 way valve. Here is what I don't understand.

Senario: Driving on a hot day at higher speeds therefor front axle is as hot as its gonna get. Then you dunk it into a cold creek. Everything contracts. The valve in the breather closes and puts the whole axle under vacume..... Isnt this going to TRY to draw cold water into the axle where ever it can??? Why have that valve there?:hhmm:

There is a valve there? wtf? I agree with you that under that circumstands it will create a vacume ( alothough with such a small area of air inside there it would be minimal. why not just put a gas/water screen or something up there. It would keep the water out and the air flowing.?

Looks like this inside.
Land Cruiser 024.webp

by the looks of that valve all that is going to be good for is keeping chunks out. i would have to say that even if you did cause a vacuum situation with your front axle, that would be the weakest link anyway so it would just suck air past the valve. it would probably be good for keeping water out unless it was totally submerged. just my two cents..

longer line (up to the fire wall in the engine bay is good) or replace with something like this: Axle Breather Kit | Marlin Crawler, Inc.

or if you have no soul, buy one from: Creeper Breather - Differential Breather Kit | Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts

i just did the extended lines, then the stock valve on the end of that, in the engine bay. works just fine for the price of a bit of hose and a brass barbed fitting.

don't forget your t-case (the trans vents through the shifter)

search, and you will find many other ideas/options for axle venting.

it's a "must do" if you will see any water over the hubs.

cheers

The one in the pic is the rear which I haven't dealt with yet. I ran the front up above the brake booster on the firewall with the cleaned up stock breather valve. I agree... If water is up that high getting water in the axle tube is the least of my worries.

I ordered some accordian breathers from a local motorcycle/atv store and Ill install them at a later time. I got an exhaust to finish at the moment and its almost done.

Cant believe I doubted the toyota engineers. lol:D

Another option which I did on mine is routing both breather tubes up to a high place in the engine bay (mine are high above the inner fender), and put an inline fuel filter on the end. That way it can exhale and inhale, and its always getting clean air.
