My story is I have a 1988 4runner with a solid front, 5.29 R&P, Detroit in the rear, ARB in the front, dual cases, 3.4 swap, running 38/12.5/15 tsl'd on home made bead lock steelies.
just spend a week in Moab and wrecked two sets of rear R&P's. Both sets I broke 3-5 teeth off the ring gear.
So I guess its time to up grade my rear setup.
Can somebody point me in the right direction. Keep in mind that I drive this rig on the street a lot, I like the width of the Toyota axle and the 5.29's work pretty good.
Thanks

First question I would have is were the rears set up correctly? After that I would look into a set of chryo treated gears.

Beyond that I would say look into a custom 9.5" rear. I have read that since the axle spline count is the same that you can take a cruiser 9.5" center and cut the ends off of a mini truck axle, center the housing and weld on the mini truck ends. Will give you the heavier center and you can set the width to use the mini axle shafts, might be what you need to keep from spitting out R&P's.

i'd go tons or down a tire size.

I think if you're going to be swapping axles, go for a 14 bolt rear. They are cheap and plentiful. Lots of parts available.
I think that if you're going to have stuff built custom on a bit of a budget, go with a cruiser center section and a full floater setup.
Otherwise.
Go to 1 tons.

Is this Chris?I'm a friend of Tyler's . I was talking with him about your r&p's going. I think there's an underlying problem there. Not sure what but nobody should crater two r&p's the same way in that short of time.Could be way cheaper to find your problem then start swapping. If you go the other way and do swap let me know, I'd be interested in your parts. Or if you go with the 9.5 I have a 60 rear end you could use

Diamond axle...

I've also heard that a slightly bent stock axle can cause many r&p issues. A stiffer diamond for the 8" can help with carrier deflection, keeping the axle in good shape.

That said, I'm swapping my 8" rear for a centered fzj80 rear axle... But I'm on 35's. You may need more...

If I were in your shoes, I'd pony up for a Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear.

I had an 87 4runner with a 4.3 vortec with supercharger. 5.29s and Detroit. Mine came with a 4cyl from factory so I had the factory rear end built. After the 4th rear axle rebuilt, I bought a v6 center and built it using a Detroit and Genuine gear. Never had another problem with it.
