Let's see if I get this right...

For the US market, assuming nothings been monkied with (because we all know that's impossible):

Pre 68 was ball and claw instead of birfs and all coarse shafts with drums (not sure if this is right, don't know much about very early front ends)

69-74 was coarse birf, coarse pinion with drums and small pattern knuckles

75-78 was disc with fine longer birfs, coarse pinion with small pattern knuckles

79+ was disc with fine shorter birfs , fine pinion, and large pattern knuckles

Fixes....

Pre- 1967 used 8mm studs to retain the differential center section into the housing instead of 10mm studs.

08/75-77 was disc with fine longer birfs, coarse pinion, 4.11 RP, with small pattern knuckles

01/1978 was disc with fine longer birfs, fine spline pinion, 4.11 RP, with small pattern knuckles

01/79+ was disc with fine shorter birfs , fine pinion, 3.70 RP, and large pattern knuckles

 Forgot about ring and pinion ratios and didn't know about 01/78 being a fine 4.11. Know musclecars better than cruisers. Thanks Poser!

So by reading the info here, I should have a '75-'78 axle. I have just purchased an axle locally for $200 and am starting to rebuild it, and the seals and bearings seem to be the same from 9/75-1/90 (according to SOR). I ve added a couple of pics of the axle. Thanks Guys

Hi

If it still has the original brake hoses. There is a small rubber ring on the hose that has DOT and a date like 3/76 on the ring.
Once you get it apart the pinion will have the teeth count on it and the manufacture date like 3/76 on the shaft between the two bearings.

Thanks jb

lug studs through the hub = older design.

Actually, looking more carefully, they may not be through the hub..

Yes it does jb, a little band that says 6/76. I will check out the pinion when I get it out. Thank you

I think what Mace was talking about was the rotor; wheel studs through the rotor or not through the rotor.

Those look like the correct wheel bearing hub and rotors for a 1976 front disc brake axle in the USA.

You can see a couple of the six threaded holes that are used to retain the rotor to the wheel bearing hub for the 08/75 to 07/80 wheel bearing hub and rotor combination.

Thanks Poser, I got my calipers today and an Ausie Locker on the way, for the rear. Can't wait to get your brackets and rotors.
