Avatar Size Variations

Dont shoot or flame me.
I cannot figure out the size limitation aspect of avatars.

I just downloaded an avatar as a test. I then attempted to upload it UNCHANGED but the cp console rejected it as too large. WTF..

What is the max k? Does it vary from jpeg to gif etc.??

Please help me eliminate my graphic ignorance.
