I am in the process of researching options for fitting an auxiliary fuel tank to my 1981 HJ47 Troopy. Does anyone have any pictures / descriptions of their own or someone else's setup to help me decide?

Cheers in advanced,

Matt

This new 45 i bought has an auxiliary tank mounted in a custom tool box on mine. I believe the guy told me it holds 65 gallons. Ill get some pics of it for you, if that will help.

If you could, that would be great!

Sounds like an interesting setup - is it a troopy or pickup?

Thanks heaps :)

Here is another thread on the subject - if you use the search function you can find many more.

Man I've gotta learn to use that search better - I've done this before! That thread is perfect

Any further pictures and ideas are always welcome. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks,

Matt.

Its the pickup... hj45 to be exact. The past owner said he paid $400 to have the extra tank made (back in 1977) and he thought he was only gonna pay around $100 . He was not happy about the price but he did say that the guy did a wonderful job on it.

Have you considered an off the shelf type made by Longranger or someone similar.
Some of the 4wd shops have a range of plastic fuel tanks you can fit yourself.

Did you specifically want an extra tank or could you use a replacement tank with a bigger volume that replaces the main tank?

Yeah I have considered off the shelf stuff - but I was just thinking about some options which I may be able to do for a bit cheaper.

I think an extra tank would be better, though I'm not ruling out a larger replacement. I want to build up my troopy for touring / expedition, so I want to be able to carry a fair amount of diesel onboard - this country of ours is a pretty big one :). I suppose it depends on what sort of capacity one can get out of a replacement tank ... any idea?

Cheers,

Matt

Usually they are about 40-50 litres more than the standard tank. Another option is one of those flat plastic boat tanks and have a small pump that can transfer the fuel.
The tank sits on the rear floor strapped down and you can stack gear on top (within reason).
Take it out when not in use
