Can anyone tell me what the normal operating temps. (range) would be on the automatic gearbox in my BJ74? Can you also tell me the temp. in which you would start to be concerned?
Thanks

Hello Charles,

I have the numbers for the A440F transmission. I think it is the one you have. Otherwise, the data is a good guideline.

Temperature range: 70°C - 80°C or 158°F - 176°F.

These figures are for ATF Dexron II oil.

Hope this helps.

Hi

I have a A340F in my KZJ78 Prado.
I have installed a Auto Temp guage from Wholesale Automatics in Australia. The Temp I run are from 50 c at crusing speed 100kph. To 130 c towing the caravan up a pass. If it hits 150 Wholesale auto's say to stop put it in Park and idle it until it comes down....
Off road is never a issue.

Exactly what I was looking for.

Curious if you have a pic of where you installed the temp probe.

Added a few gauges to the BJ74....... Including a transmission temp. gauge.

Very cool! Any pics of the wire routing and probe install? My 1988 BJ74 will be my first auto trans in a 4x4. I am looking forward to seeing how it performs on and off road. Is the temp gauge necessary if I don't plan on towing? What's the reputation of the 74's auto transmission?

I'm also curious as to where you installed the temp probe, as well as any fittings required. Pics please.....
I should have some photos tomorrow.

I'll still attempt to get some photos tomorrow but the sending unit and associated wiring is available from VDO as a kit and replaces the transmission filler bolt. The kit comes in a variety of thread patterns and obviously the correct one has to be chosen for this application. It's a pretty handy design.

The transmission temperature (with an aux cooler installed) just barely exceeded the minimum value. (120 degrees)

Geez, maybe you need to go tow something around to verify that it works. Maybe a heep needs a tow to to the shop :)

"Maybe a heep needs a tow to the shop" ........ Sorry I have high standards. :)
