I have a 87 pickup and I have been experiencing problems with the transmission when it sits all day or overnight and then just when ever. It will not shift right it will want to start out in D and I have to shift it down to 1 but it then it is still only in 2. After I drive while and get up to 50 or more and everything is warmed up it then shifts fine. I changed the fluid already, any suggestions other than buy a LC?

Forget the cruiser, buy a manual trans.

Well buy the cruiser if you find one for the same price as a trans.

if its loose linkage fine. other than that, the trans has to come out anyway, and what better time to slap a manual in there. and besides thats easy.

Dont waste your money rebuilding it if the trans is bad... I did and... well wasted my money!!

I swapped it out for a manual trans which was really easy... Havent had a problem since...
The trans was on a 90 4runner 3.0v6.. I swapped it out for the r150...bolts right on. just need a new trans mount.

may sound basic, but you changed the fluid. Correct fluid type? Correct fluid amount? I recall my buddy having shifting probs because he was too low on fluid. I haven't had an automatic so can't say for sure. Something about he checked it while the engine was off instead of running. I doubt this is it, but other than a linkage problem, which probably wouldn't go away, I'm stumped. It's the A340 or whatever right, so it shares fluid with the transfer case? maybe something there? my 2 pesos
