Auto switch on climate control?

I will explain why I hate the auto function so much, with the caveat that I had a '94 80 series from new until last year, and the 1997 I have now is not originally mine, so I may just be used to something different. During the summer, the air it blows is never cold enough. The dial only goes to 65, which means that, when the computer says "65", the air is not as cold. Well, in Alabama, when it is 102 degrees, I don't want it to be the temperature that the computer thinks is 65. I want it to blow cold air until it is cold.

Well I'm sure the humidity plays a factor. But here in SoCal San Fer Valley it gets to 110-120º fairly regularly during the summer. For me, the Auto feature works fine in making sure the cabin gets cold quick and then stays there.

Can't you just deselect the auto feature, slide the deal over to the left and put the fan on high?

Mine works just like that, push the high fan button and it stays on high.

I love it, works great. The only time that I have to mess with it is the between month, like now, during the day it's warm, so bump it down, at night, always wearing shorts and it's :censor: freezing (like 65F:eek:) have to bump it up.:D

With the auto feature, the temp slider does not affect the temp at which the air comes out of the vents. Rather, it is the target temp that the system is trying to acheive in the cab.

If the interior of the car is 120* and you want to get it to 75*, then setting the slider to 65* will not get you there any faster than setting it to 75*. The system will operate on high with full compressor engagement until it achieves the desired temp, then it will bring down the fan speed and cycle the compressor as needed to maintain the target temp. Think of it as a thermostat setting.

It only requires occaisional minor adjustment of the temp slider in the swing season as mentioned above, but mostly you never have to mess with it.

As already stated, there's no "simple" way to retro-fit the auto feature in rigs without all the sensors.

I use the Auto feature sparingly, but the wife uses the one in hers all the time.
I'm more of a "windows open" sorta guy whilst she's the "blow all the cold air on me" kinda gal.

:grinpimp:

After reading this thread I have decided to forgive my evil auto button and try to use it again. I will let you guys know if my opinion changes.

Down here on the coast we have 100% humidity all the time and this auto feature just seems to be more trouble than it was worth. Now that it is getting cooler, it might prove useful.

I have a peave about running the A/C when not needed. After sitting with the windows up on a cool, sunny day, the A/C would kick on high and blast me with hot air for several minutes trying to cool the cabin. I hated that part. Pretty much all summer my hand went automatically from the ignition to the A/C button when I started it. I should've pulled the A/C fuse and been done with it, but I did use the A/C on hot days or to defrost.

I am still in the process of replacing the compressor, dryer, expansion valve etc. to get the ac running. The thing I hate most about the temp system is that the air contol button always defaults back to interior reciculate when turned off. I am usually a fresh air type and hate AC smell you get when the AC is left on recirculate too much. I am not sure if there is any way to diable this but my quess is that it is this way for an important reason.

I found this reason out the hard way when leaving the windows up while following a large group on a dusty trip. I put the fan on low with outside air since my AC was not working in an effort to keep the dust to min in the cab. Well guess what happened the next day when I opened the windows and cranked up the fan to high, you quessed it, a cloud of dust out all vents like an old cheek and chong movie. Apparently there is a very direct route from the hood vents to the inside vents and the entire system filled with a fine dusty powder. My opinion of the temp system will likley change when the AC is fixed. BTW mine is 97 CE with auto climate contol.
