I am toying with getting a 70-series at some point: maybe a 5 cylinder 77 or a BJ74. I wonder about getting an auto vs. a 5-speed. I have heard the auto-trans is expensive to replace here in Canada if it fails, but that the 5-speed is more easily obtainable. Any experiences on that?

Cheers,

The auto is the same as a 60 series. IMO it boils down to whether you like changing gears or not.
The rebuild price(in oz) of the auto is slightly more than the 5 sp but I wouldnt let that sway me away from an auto if you want one, they are still strong and long lasting;)

Ive had both, I like both, for some types of 4 wheelin I prefer an Automatic .

Parts can be had for both. Both the 5 speed and the Auto are expensive to properly rebuild.

Choose what you prefer... do your due diligence before you purchase. If an auto has discoloured or burned smelling fluid, then stay away from it.
