Just thought I'd show you guys a couple of Aussie 100s setup for touring. These two vehicles are currently out on a ~6 week trip in to some pretty remote territory - basically out to the Canning Stock Route via the Hay River track.

Dad drives the IFS 100 and the 105 series (rigid front end) belongs to a friend who he is travelling with.

Quick list of mods from fron to back(2004 100 Series IFS - 1HD-FTE):
  • Warn XD-9000
  • ARB Winch bar
  • IPF spotlights with 'Fatboy' HIRs
  • Factory dual battery system supplemented with a Redarc isolator (w/ lots of wiring)
  • Steinbauer power upgrade
  • Heavy duty OME torsion bars with the strengthening brackets, upgraded rear springs, Polyair bags & Nitrochargers all round
  • LongRanger long range tank (182L), replaces factory sub tank
  • Kaymar rear bay with one wheel carrier on the passenger side
  • Front & rear Airlockers
  • Custom drawer system (originally in the 80 Series) that holds the fridge and all of the food. Note that the rear seats have been removed and the cargo barrier in the forward position. Under the false floor is a 55L water bladder.
  • ARB roof rack (this damn thing weighs way too much) with a shade tent, spare tyre, some light stuff and some extra fuel (if needed)
  • Icom IC-F7000 HF radio, GME UHF CB. The HF autotune is mounted to the rear swing arm, originally it was going to be a Codan 9350 Autotuner but I wasn't able to get it working
  • Cooper S/Ts & 1 x BFG A/T spare (vehicle was bought with the Coopers, but we've never had a BFG puncture in all of our travels)
This is the first big trip for this vehicle (since we've owned it). Thankfully the previous owner spent most of the big $$$ putting the expensive bits on & Dad got it at a pretty good price.

And the 105 that belongs to his travelling partner, from memory...
  • 1HZ turbo'd with a liquid/air intercooler & 3" exhaust
  • TJM bullbar with an (I think) OX electric winch
  • Lightforce 240 spot lights
  • Upgraded suspension, can't remember the particulars atm
  • Dual batteries w/ Redarc isolator
  • Glind heat exchanger shower
  • Kaymar rear tyre carrier (fitted to factory rear bar)
  • Front & rear Airlockers
  • Codan 9350 HF radio w/ tapped antenna
  • Globalstar satellite phone
  • ARB roof rack
  • LongRanger long range tank (180L)
  • Similar rear storage unit, but the middle row of seats are still in
  • Dick Cepek M/Ts
As you can imagine, both vehicles have all sorts of little gadget - there must be 5 GPS devices between the two of them, two HF radios, two satellite phones etc

Last but not least is a photo of my 80, which used to be my fathers before he got the 100. I would've been out there with them if it weren't for work.

Quick rundown on it:
  • 1HD-T with 3" exhaust
  • factory lockers
  • ARB winch bar & sidebars, IPF spotties with HID inserts
  • Warn XD 9000
  • King springs w/ Koni shocks
  • Dual batteries w/ Redarc isolator
  • Kaymar rear bar w/ swing away tyre carrier
  • LongRanger long range tank
  • Outback rear drawer system (not quite as customised as the other two setups)
The 80 has about 360 000km (about 224 000 miles) and is still going strong on the original motor. It's done numerous trips out in to central Australia (about four crossings of the Simpson desert), Cape York, the Victorian high country (the closest thing to mountains we have) and been bashed around the track more than its fair share.

The other two won't be back for about 5 weeks, so no photos of them dirty yet :)

I should have been more clear - I meant only that post :) I thought I could attach 3 photos per post, but you can't, so I merged the posts and hosted the images off site.

Yes. But

  • We pay through the nose for the magazine's postage
  • We cop it again with the exchange rate (Aussi dollar versus kiwi)
  • We aren't elligible for any of the subscription discounts
  • We aren't elligible for any of the competitions, and
  • We can't get any of the giveaways that you aussis are offered when you subscribe.

Here you pay up to 50% more by subscription than if you were to buy the same magazine from a local newsagent.. In fact, the only gain from subscribing is "knowing you will get a copy each month" and "getting it well ahead of the shops".

But if you think I feel disadvantaged - Think again.

I must be at least 2/3rds of my way through a 2-year subscription and the latest "change of editor" and "introduction of DVDs" meant a deterioration in standards (in my view). DVD content is usually repeated in the text anyway. And who the hell wants to watch someone cooking up slops????.... and endless advertising that becomes such a pain to fast-forward through. Even the sections I'm interested in - like watching the FABULOUS OUTBACK - I'm usually watching at the fastest speed at which I can view it while still understanding what's being said!!!!)

I have always been mostly interested in reading about "older rigs that have undergone interesting modications/repairs/etc - preferably by the owners themselves too rather than by the "chain-store-professionals". And I believe they now publish that stuff in a different mag. (They've certainly taken it out of Australian 4WD Action.)

I'm now sick to death of the same old "turning a shopping cart into an off-road weapon" stuff, all the "new vehicle advertising", and the shear repetitiveness of the articles.

The cliche's are from beginning to end..... and there is now no innovation at all.

Roothys still got something to offer when working on his old jeep - But even that is often full of "Chookas in the mudflats" verbiage that has gone very stale for me ...... And they're "milking his popularity to death".

End of rant.

Sorry folks - This subject matter triggered me off. (To a large extent - I can't wait for my subscription to end!!!!!)

Cheers
Lost marbles

But I do understand those of you who like the mag. Hell - I did once too. And it's probably still far better than any that are published over here. (I subscribed to one of ours but it was full of "self-praise". The editor was always described as "a 4WD expert", or "worldclass photographer" etc. That was enough to put me off that magazine for life!)

:hhmm: Crikey..... I'm a moaning b#stard today...... Aren't I?

Perhaps I'm just jealous of all the discounts and freebies you aussis get. (Ya neva know :D)

I'll go back to my knitting now.

PS. I must have got lost somehow --0-- I don't ever go to this board??? (Expedition builds) Hmmmmmmm. Perhaps this thread started life on the "40 series" or "diesel" boards. Sorry............. ----- Love the Aussi outback - Fabulous people throughout and fabulous scenery of course. [Spent many months touring it and WILL DEFINITELY be back. Spents YEARS in Western Australia too. Northern WA and the Northern Territory are on the agenda (again). Perhaps northern Queensland too.]

Maybe we can come to an arrangement. I have magazines in perect condition that end up in the bin.
If the postage is not a killer, you can have mine for the postage cost;)

A fact of life is they must create advertising revenue or the cost of the magazine would be double and who is going to pay $20?
I agree it can be repetative and not all articles are my cup of tea,but without being parochial,I still have not found a better magazine.
I dont bother with subs and when I have had enough ,I usually skip a few issues until something really neat is on the front cover.
Maybe they need a Kiwi version of Roothy as his sidekick,a type of Footrot Flats character in a blue singlet and telling lots of sheep+sex+underarm bowling jokes:D

Sounds like we are similar Rosco. I NEVER read anything twice and always giveaway my mags immediately I've read them. (Some people tell me they like to store them all as "reference material".)

Very kind offer too. But I think it was "Twisty's white forty" that was the last "owner's feature vehicle" that was of any interest to me. And even then - their coverage was way too "superficial". (There was more interesting information about that vehicle on MUD.) So it isn't really worth your trouble. ..... Thanks all-the-same.

You should do what I do - I give my mag away to whichever "4x4nut" I see first at work after I've finished reading it. (Very convenient.)

I was a bit harsh on the mag in my earlier post. - It is true that right now I don't know of a better one.

Apart from wanting to see interesting OLD owner's rigs I do like to see the outback. But instead of boring stuff like comments on fuel-economy-achieved, price-of-fuel, cost-of-motorcamps - they need to spice it up with "pictures-and-text" of such things as "breakdowns-with-trackside-repairs", "getting hung-up on a rock during a dangerous river crossing" etc. There are still people (real characters) in OZ that do undertake REALLY INTERESTING outback "safaris" so they should use them rather than use the types of people who don't even change their own oil.

Crikey - I remember meeting a "tour bus driver" who was one of those "real characters". He kept spewing out loads of "helpful advice" to his passengers (probably a few kiwis amongst them too) as we talked (like "Beware of Jock the Croc" and "watch out for Sid the snake"), and was incredibly "laid-back" in his attitude. (Looked like a real pisshead actually!). We (wife and I) had overheating problems and he offered us the use of the "compressed air" on his bus. - I can't really remember what we were expected to do with it -- something to do with blowing out the passages in the radiator I think. He then offered to tow us hundreds of kilometers to the next town. ....... Bloody hell. Can you imagine that! Being towed along at 100 km/hr through massive potholes, in choking red dust -- and meanwhile - all you can see in front of you is the back of a massive tourbus!!!!!! He was deadly serious too!!! (Leastwise - he had me convinced that he was. But perhaps he was just secretly laughing at me. He was like that :D)

So - In outback-touring articles - I'd much more happily read about "real outback characters" (like this tourbus madman) than your timid cityslickers in their plastic-bumpered 4x4 who decide to rent-out their city home in favour of doing a working tour of the outback.

Crickey - You could feature an article on a roadtrain driver. (Choose one who is photogenic - You know - Big toothless grin - Grimy sweaty teeshirt.) And give the story it's 4x4 connection by hearing his stories about 4x4 accidents/mishaps he has come across in his travels. And give lots of shots of superb outback scenery too. (He probably owns a 4x4 anyway as his private vehicle.)

I think it would be easy to provide a 4x4 connection to INTERESTING articles that at first glance - might not appear to have one..

Ha Ha. Yeah ----

If I get withdrawal symptoms when my subscription expires - I'll be in touch Rosco. :D

Hey, how about you send those mags to San Diego, CA?? I'll take 'em.

In regards to the DVD, I'm sure it won't work here because in AU they use PAL while we are NTSC.

Im pretty sure it would be cheaper to have a subscription as mailing costs to the US are around $15 KG and a magazine is nearly a KG. I was going to send a 80 series FSM once and the cost was $40+

Im already sending the DVDs to NA and they work fine as most DVD players are no longer locked to a region code.
They play on a computer as well;)

Nice rig stu and a true expedtion vehicle. What sort of 10 ply do you have?

G'day RoscoFJ73,

The tyres are westlake 235/85 R16. Getting quite a good run out of them. Put 30 000K's on them so far. Not bad price either, $160 each.

They are the same rolling dia as the 7.50R16, but just a little bit wider.
