I am looking at a quad cab Hilux as a possible next project to bring in. While perusing Gumtree, I noticed that all of the pre- '91 trucks have solid axles. Do all of them come this way? If so, that is fantastic. Also, they all seem to be diesels. I have heard bad things about the heads on the small diesels so I might prefer to get my hands on a gas model but these do not seem to be too common. Are most going to be diesels?

Thanks

From what I've read most of them over there are Diesels, not Petrol engines.

Aussie here with a 95 dual cab hilux.
My car has leaf and solid axle and the 2.8 litre diesel which was strangely called the 3L.
The motors keep chugging along for a long time unless you strap a turbo on and wind up the boost.
You can get the 2.4 litre petrol but there seem to be more in the single cabs.
I must say, I am not kind to my motor and she has seen the red line a few times but every 5000kms I change oil and filter.
The diesel is no power house and you'll be dropping back for lower gears but she'll hold 100km/h on the highway fine.
