are can-backs really weather-proof?

so, when i bought my 4runner, i also got a can-back soft top for it used. it was a good deal and i really wanted a quality top so i got it with the understanding from many forum posts and websites that it was weather proof. i didnt bother putting it on cause it was cold at the time and I had plenty of other work to do first (engine and trans rebuild).

last night i started putting the thing together. I knew going into it that i was going to have to make something to attach the rear flap to because i didnt want to go the route of drilling holes into my tailgate for snaps.

but, now that i have the top on the truck, i dont see really how its supposed to be weather-proof? around the cab, the top really just snaps down to the cab strip. so water coming from the front of the truck could go in right? i mean its a tight fit, but not water tight.

like if i were driving on the highway in the rain, it would just come up over the windshield, across the roof and into the cab inbetween the canvas and metal snap strip. right?

now, i havent tried this thing out at all yet, but just my observations in building so far. any one agree here?

the thing that sucks is that it could have been easily remideed. all they would have had to do is make the canvas a couple inches longer and put the snaps on the underside of the metal strip. then you could fold it over the metal strip and snap it underneath before bolting it down to the rubber weather strip. nice tight fit. just seems like something they should have considered for 1400 freakin dollars IMO.

"The fit is snug and precise, and Can-Back stresses that you need to make sure the stock hard top seal is in good shape. That's your insurance against leaks and excessive wind noise."

Can-Back 4Runner Soft Top Review - ORN
"
I was extremely impressed with the Can-Back during a recent rainstorm. The top let no water into the truck, and water did not soak into the Sunbrella fabric!"

bkg,
did you drive them in the rain ever? or were they just chillin in a parking lot during a quick drizzle?

dont get me wrong, if it doesnt leak in a hard driving rain, im glad, but i just dont see how is all.

i have a soft-topper, it does not leak, it also has a rubber seal that the top goes over buy those snaps.

cool guys. thanks

4wheelunderground,
where did you add the weatherstripping. i couldnt tell from the pics.
btw- i like the crushed fiberglass top upside down on the pavement. lol. its like a big "F that piece!"

--1 more question:
i also noticed in your last pic where the side is rolled up that the cab strip is kind of bent in toward the cab at the bottom. mine has this little flat steel piece with two nut-serts in it that connects the bottom of the cab strip to the side rails. Is mine a really old version of the top, or is it modified or something?
(bought it used so idk)

Yep, I was so done with the hard top I was excited to ditch it, I'd been wanting the Can-Back for about 7 years when I finally got one.

As for an older version, its possible. But those pics of mine are about 4years old.

The weather stripping is just Home Depot or Lowe's off the shelf stuff.

4wheel,

"The weather stripping is just Home Depot or Lowe's off the shelf stuff."

i meant where on the truck did yo put it. just replacing the stock seal underneath the side rails?

also, do you have the rail that goes over the tailgate for the rear flap or does yours snap to the actual tailgate.
(apparently the new versions have a "tail rail")

anyways, wondering if someone had a pic so i could try and recreate one for my earlier style can-back.

Does anybody know if Can-Back are still in business? Would like one for my 2000 Tacoma Ex-Cab.

try truckcandy.com or something to that effect.
i think they are making them on a limited basis...

Thanks Bryan!
