hey guys, looking to maybe join cc but not for a month or two just cause i wanna gwet my truck in decent trail shape. but i'm hav'n a problem with my 80 and before i go to a mechanic i'd kinda like an idea of whats go'n on and if someone could come and look at it,

my 94 fzj80 is makeing almost a grinding noise in the front end and its either from the steering or axle i dont know, any suggestion or anyone knowledgeable on the 80 series and yes i could post this on the 80 tech forum but doesnt help me if i dont know what i'm looking at...hence...someone with the knowledge

let me know thanks guys

matt

from delta

Put the front up on jack stands. Put the t-case and tranny in nuetral and try to spin the front tires by hand. This will help you detect if the noise is coming from the brakes or front axle assembly. Once you pinpoint the source, pull it apart and fix it.

If you were in Abby, I would take a look at it but Delta is a bit of a drive.

Anyways, the usual culprits of front end grinding is as jfc says are brake related: a rock caught or worn rotor pad(s). If you have a caliper that isn't releasing you will grind down a pad fairly quickly to the rivets.

If you don't do your own mechanical work than I suggest you take it to one of the local Cruiser shops to be fixed rather than going to some place like Speedy, etc.

local cruiser shops...?....like who, besides ateb...dont really like them

cruiser shops?

steve at ebi has been so incredibly helpful to me i would to recommend him strongly. i called him from the interior over x-mas week end and he was will to airfreight parts to me.(not that i would recommend putting a brother in that position)anyway ebi extreme bends inc.

There are a couple of shops as well as a lot of knowledgeable people in the area. Steve at EBI, Ciaran at Cruiserland, Greg at G&S. You would have to call them to see if anyone is willing to make house calls. If those options are not working for you then you can try doing it your self with guidance from us - which is not a bad idea as it will help you to get to know what you drive. If all of that fails you can sell it to me and let me deal with it :D.
If you decided that you are not going to sell it to me, a couple of questions, does it have manual hubs (don't take this the wrong way but I don't know how much you know about your truck so I will clarify) - knobs that you turn on the outside, middle of the front hub that the wheels are on, to engage the front wheels for 4 wheel drive. If they are in the off position and the grinding is still there then it likely is the wheel bearings if the problem happens during rotation of the front wheels ( not turning or going over bumps ). If it happens when they are in the locked position or you have no manual hubs (which means they are always locked) then the issue could be much bigger and requires more details.

When I picked up my 80 last year the grinding/ticking sound was the birfield. I replaced it with a Longfield (less then 1/2 what Toyota wanted). Problem solved. This past summer the other side made the same grinding/ticking sound. Replaced that side. Problem solved.

The sound only happened when I turned sharp. It was extra loud when turning in reverse. Worth looking into.
