so im nearing the end of my expedition build of my 81 45 troopie...i hit the scales the other day and its nearing 3500kg fully loaded...so now im starting to wonder if the frame will be tested here...i'd rather not push my luck...so im looking for the max load weight for it...anyone got the figures?

My FJ45's have a plate with a Max GTW (Gross Train Weight) of 3000KG, that is vehicle and any trailer. There is no GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight) on the plate be it can only be equal to or less than the GTW.

The value for GTW and GVW is as much determined by the brakes and tires as the frame and body, also above a particular weight many countries require the same tests as used for smaller commercial vehicles.

I imagine the troopie has the same heavy duty springs etc. as the pickup FJ/HJ45 etc. full floating axle on the rear will help if you have that.

Perhaps find out what the 60 series owners run for overland use. My guess is at 3500KG you might break quite a few parts on the rougher roads, thats close to a ton on each tire if evenly distributed.

Just for interest what do you think the starting weight was, bare vehicle?

Ian,

How on Earth did you get that troopy up to 3500 kgs? That is 7716 lbs in real weight- that is massively heavy. My HJ47 with skids, high roof, camper interior, winch, roof rack and full tanks 'only' weighed in at 6800 lbs on the scales in New Mexico.

At any rate, I agree with malcb- a Toyota frame can handle the weight. You just might notice more wear in things like bushings, bearings, shocks, spings, brakes, etc. Depending how pedantic the countries you are travelling to/through are, there may be an issue with whether you will be allowed on the road or not, but I doubt it. Certainly in Australia, Big Brother would have a thing or three to say. But given you are going through Afrika and up South America into the US, I would not be too worried about anyone stopping you at the border for being over GVW.

As for Canada when you go to register it- I don't know what they will say. However, I'm sure you can get the weight down by removing a few select items before inspection.:)

Just make certain that you are happy with the efficacy of the brakes.

Cheers,

Josh

so i went back to the scales...it seemed that last time they hadn't zero'd them...and now the weight [fully loaded, fuelled/watered - came in at 2840kg....so you can all now rest easy...a bit of a relief...

Ian,

That's 6261 lbs in real weight- you are fine there. I htought that sounded pretty heavy. Fully loaded, Patches is about 500 lbs heaver than where you are now. I have heavy/heavy OMEs like yours with BFG A/Ts, disk front and drum rear. I have driven her many thousands of miles that way, and there have been no negative effects that I have noticed.

Cheers,

Josh
