Anyone have pics of a custom fan shroud for a V8 conversion?

I'm pretty sure your not going to have the IP problems I had, and some black smoke at startup is normal because the engine is too cold to burn all the fuel.

I m also confused about the 18" fan you looked at, a fan that big should move a lot of air in theory. The model # for the same fan as mine but in 18" is FLE-1518 and its a flex-a-lite fan. Also don't forget to that the pilot dia. has to be 3/4 inch on the water pump side, and you have to buy metric bolts to mount it to your pump

Can't wait for the pics, and good luck finding a fan.

Glad you got this sorted out, 'cause I've been pretty forgetful on getting you a pic of mine :D

BTW your dad's good with mold making... nice work.

I went to a local guy yesterday that builds race cars and sells some parts from his shop. He sells flex-a-lite fans and had quite a few there. He told me to go with the plastic flex-a-lite fan, I assumed it was just a cheaper substitute for the metal fan (sure looks that way) but he said that is what they run on alot of his race cars (the other ones they run plain metal fans without the clutch to move alot of air) He said they move more air than the metal ones because they don't flatten out as much and they are pretty much indestructable. (metal ones sometimes bend or come apart) I really wanted the metal one because it looks cool but he talked me out of it. I am sure they would both work about the same at the low rpms the diesel turns (the plastic ones are good for 8,000 rpm, won't need that!) Now that it is in I realize I need a new shroud as well! I am going to modify my existing one like FL cruiser did, wish I was talented enough to make that fiberglass one though!

My dad is really stoked that everybody likes his shroud, now he says he wished he took a buffer to it and polished it up.

rtarh2o- I agree that the plastic fan is a good idea, it's probably half the weight of my fan and not as dangerous. As for looks, I think my engine compartment is starting to look like a box of crayolas, which is not good.
BTW, how's the fit from the fan to the radiator?

I think the plastic fan will be fine, it sits about 1.5" from the radiator, I used a 1.5" spacer and I think it will work fine. I am going to just use my fan shroud, I am thinking I will just cut about 3" out of the long side and putting the lip back on it. It will be about 1.5" short on each side but I can't see that being a problem since the electric fans never cover the entire radiator either. It is strange the straight 6 was not centered in the engine bay? The 6.2 sits in there great.

dude that shroud is way wicked cool............ hell i want to learn how to do it just to do it. LOLOLO honest... cheers

Its not that hard, just really really messy. I would have done it myself but my hand is currently in a cast and my dad does a better job anyways. Maybe its a good thing my hand is out of comission cause I got free labor out of sympathy.:D

When you told me that you don't have that much space from the pulley to the radiator, I forgot that you have the newer pulleys that stick way out. Most of the other guys on the Mud with 6.2s including myself have the older pulleys that are closer to the water pump, I personally wish I had the same pulleys as you, then I wouldnt have 4" between the radiator and the fan. I think yours should pull a lot of air.

The 6.2 does fit nicely, but I'm still waiting for your pics. Is it still getting the exhaust done?

Here are the pics, I got a few today with my phone as it was dropped off at the exhaust shop, not great but I will get some better ones when I get it back. I actually have the same pulley set-up as you. I wish I had gone serpentine belt, especially if it would have given me more room. I just didn't think to set the radiator in when I trial fit the engine, it looked like there was plenty of room. I used the Marks Adapters transfer case adapter that bolts to the original mounts so I thought everything would line up. So far everything except the radiator came out fine (of course I still haven't driven it so I am not totally sure about that) I hope to get it back tomorrow so I can finish up all the detail work over the weekend but they said it could be monday, not sure if I can wait that long!
Thanks for your help

you know i made that mistake also, i forgot trail fit with the radiator also, but it was in a 40 so that was alot more forgiving than a 80, it was no big deal to redo becasue the hole front clip was off. But in a 80 i can see what a PITA that would be. Lessons learned . But you might be all right with a pusher electric fan. I also on my last 80 used 2, 16 inch fans on the stock radiator, one on the front pushing and the other on the back pulling. there was an over lap so i think it worked out real nice. Cant remember where i saw it but someone makes a sweet control box for dual electric fans, they come on one at a time as needed. sweet set up. anyway have a great day cheers

Man, you didnt me you painted everything, it looks like sweeeet!
I hope I never see it in person cause I'm going to be super jealous.:D
BTW, does your AC work pretty good?

Wasnt cooling all that great so I added a piece of roof flashing left over from a job to the fiberglass shroud. Now it works pretty
good. I even put little screws with wingnuts so I can take it off when necessary.
