There was an article in our local paper on tent reviews. His favorite family tent is the Kelty Mantra 7. He liked the aluminum poles, noiseless and tough zippers, fully covered vestibule, very dry and good in the wind. Any feed back on this?

I have had a mantra 6 for about 2 years now(next size down form the 7 I believe they make an M 8 as well). I love the tent. Good construction, very weather proof etc. However, these tents pitch VERY tight, and the aluminum poles are pretty long when assembled. Also, while i like full sleeve contruction for the pole sleaves, I HATE it when taking the tent down. Just remember to Push the poles through instead of trying to pull them through or else the poles will come apart and pinch the sleeve fabric

I have a tent with sleeves like that as well. I found if you pull them while trying to arch them a little it will not allow them to disengage from each other.

I have the Mantra7. I absolutely love it for family car camping. It is huge and very well built for a large tent. I come from using only 3 and 4 season mountaineering tents for serious use. So I was critical.
Assembles and disassembles like any quality 3 season tent. Easy.
Quality, Easton aluminum poles.
BIG inside. In foul weather, my wife and kid bring EVERYTHING inside to cook(not recommended) and eat, including table and chairs. Why not?
The only issue I have is when it is VERY windy. the tent holds its shape well and have seen many others collapse while mine wasnt even thinking of it. But because it is full mesh under the fly, sand, dust, or snow will work it way into the tent easily. Again, this is when very windy and NO tent with any window screens would stop this from happening. On the opposite, if you have the fly off, air circulation and sky viewing is awesome.
Holds snow loads, sheds well. Great in the rain.
I got mine at Sierratradingpost.com on closeout- insane price
enjoy,
aaron
