I was wondering how old tires are that are actually sold to folks and how old is OK. I looked at tireracks tech how to read tire age or date of manufacture. So with that being said I picked up a set of mud tires off Craigslist with only 20 miles on them. The rubber is still soft and pliable but the date on tires is 4307.... which is the 43rd week of 2007.

search around on mud. there are a few specific threads on tire age v safety. Some people draw the line when dry rot is visible in the tread, or the sidewall, or just from age.
consider that tires are very important in the performance and safety of a vehicle. They are consumable and too damn important to skimp on quality.
It scares me a bit to think back on the tires i drove with before.
If they're still soft and no signs f dryrot, then you might be ok.
depends a lot on how they were stored and the physical makeup of the rubber.

Will do ..... maybe even a phone call or two. I had some nitto grapplers put on in june or so of last year on my ford and they say 1312 on them. So they are really fresh so to speak but I will have to do some research to make sure whats good or bad. Thanks

Any literature you'll find on this subject will present an overly cautious approach. As a result lots of people discard perfectly good tires, which has created a market for used tires in many areas. IMO, unless they have obvious issues, drive'um until they're (almost) bald.

as long as they're not rotted, id run em.. mine are from 05 and still have over half tread and are just now starting to show some age in between the tread lugs.

I did get a general rule of thumb from several tire sites which say 10 years from date of manufacture or when the tire compound starts to change. The whole reason I was asking is Im building my 85 4runner up piece by piece and the tires that were on it are dry rotted so far that they are now going flat. So I want bigger tires but need a lift first / new gears for bigger tires ...... everyone knows the drill on build ups and I found a set of samller mud tires and didnt want to get screwed. I want the tires to last for at least a year or so, so I can get my stuff together. Its a project for sure and I really didnt expect the tires on it to be this bad.

But to answer back....... the tires I did get are good and rubbery, not hard and Im gonna run them till they are bald for sure!!!!
