Thank you guys for thinking highly of me enough to recommend my shop and our skills. I am a Cruiser guy. I have owned many and I just found my very first FJ40 I bought back when I was 18 and its going to be a restomod soon. My wife drives her FJ80 daily too. I also have a FJ62 that might turn into a shop truck soon.

As for our work, I am working on adding an IP camera so everyone can see some of the work we do while we do it. I think it would be cool for guys that cant come by to check out the progress to see the rig come to shape... So thats in the works, also im not shy in letting you see the behind the curtin, no secrets here!

Land Cruiser Specialist

Do y'all know of any good restoration shops in Texas? Apparently Cool Cruisers of Texas in Rowlett is no longer doing restorations. They told me today that they are only selling parts right now. And previously, I believe they were only restoring vehicles that they purchased and then resold.

I'm looking for a place that will do restorations and/or mechanical repair work on a Land Cruiser that I bring in. A place with some quality advertising like TLC would be great. Watching their YouTube channel makes me long for a place of that caliber in Texas.

There's an Austin option. Edwin Kincaid at Land Cruiser Specialist. He works primarily on old iron--40's and 60's. I think his labor rate is $65/hr. He doesn't advertise, has never found it necessary.

Edwin doesn't do paint and body work but there's a guy who leases part of his shop who does, so anything you need could be done on the premises.

LCS Austin's Land Cruiser Specialist!

related but I don't need cruiser work done nor want to bother those good guys by having my vehicle tie up their shop.....

I wonder if any of them will be interested in rebuilding my diff (off my previa)? It's the same thing as the 86-95 hilux... 8" ring gear, 4.30 ratio

they can probably do a better job than my shop can right now, and if so for any reasonable price, I prefer to have my spare housing (all the guts are trashed) rebuilt with all new parts combined with my Altezza LSD (OEM part in Japan, our IS300 never got it), then pay my shop to just swap it on... I tried to pull this out myself (so my buddy and I could rebuild it... but he has no time for anything now) but the axles are seized... already broke one slide hammer and the other 10lbs ones didn't work! Just not enough leverage on the ground :(

He is rebuilding my diffs right now. I am having ARB lockers and 488 gears installed as well as installing new birfs in the front. The key thing to keep in mind with Buddy is that he won't rush the job. Most mechanics are simply paid by the job which means the job is scheduled for x number of hours and that is what they are going to get paid whether they do a quality job or not. Buddy will do it for that number of hours but may actually spend more time doing the job to ensure it is done correctly. You don't get that attention to detail at your Lexus dealership or nearly anywhere else. Buddy is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about Landcruisers from 40 series up. He was a Lexus master mechanic earlier in his career and can do any job from rebuilding an engine or transmission to axles, diffs and transmissions.

You pay for it as his rates aren't low but I'd rather have it done correctly than cheaply.

I just found this thread today and my HDJ81 will be shipping in a few weeks from Japan. Are these shops still in business today? A lot changes in 8 years and I'd rather have a trustworthy LC mech work on her.

I use a guy name Jeremy at Toyota of McKinney for the jobs I don't want to tackle myself. He is very knowledgeable about old cruisers and does good work. You might want to forego the dealership experience and go with someone who specializes in vintage restorations like Butch who is "Texican" on Mud. He runs a shop up in Bonham, Texas north of McKinney. Butch has rebuilt MANY old Landcruisers.

I’m in austin , so far this year (2019) I’ve used ‘rising sun’ (I don’t recommend them) and ‘landCruiser specialists’ (I do recommend them, they also know the diesels too). Ive had several repairs there on my 40s (head gasket, valve job, fuel system and carb rebuild) and 80 (PHH, install Elocker in rear axle wired to factory locker actuator knob, etc). Ask for Edwin or Shawn.... downside is be prepared to wait. They can get busy as landCruiser specialist is the choice shop for central Texas .... the parking lot is always full. Worth the wait, in my personal experience.

Congrats on your HDJ81!

Thanks for the reply Jack. Know of any on the Fort Worth side of the metroplex? T.i.a. Jason

I'd Ping Butch. I am pretty sure Butch knows everyone who knows anything about Cruisers in DFW. Texican.

All: I reached out to Butch but unfortunately, he has retired. He gave me the name of Frisbee Auto in Waxahachie but I would like to find someone closer to Mckinney. I see the Jeremy @ Toyota McKinney but no contact information. If anyone has other names with contact information north of Dallas, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

travis

If you are in central Texas ... LandCruiser Specialist in Austin. Go to the shop and talk face to face w Edwin / Shawn.

I’ve used Rising Sun and another mechanist and after using LandCruiser specialist I won’t take my 40 or 80 series anywhere else. LCS knows these trucks best. LCS fixed fuel issue in my 40, carburetor, and also did a valve job and Head gasket replacement on another 40 which I’ve since sold but A1 work. LCS also has put in Harrop rear locker wired to factory actuator in my 80, suspension work, and CEL work, etc. recommend them if you are in central TX. Only caveat is you may have to wait a while because their shop is always full ... but imo good mechanic is worth the wait as the other shops did questionable work for me.

Just call the service department at Toyota of McKinney (Pat Lobb Toyota) and ask for the service department. Tell them you have an old Toyota you'd like to have some work done on and that you'd like to have Jeremy do the work. They all know he is the guy that people with vintage Toyotas go to.

I know Mike Frisbee. Good guy. He has done work on my 80 and did good work. I just cannot make the time to drive to Waxahachie when I live in Allen. McKinney is right next door and Jeremy also does excellent work.

I found this doing a search near Keller:

Dajda's Auto Care [Inside Manuel Used Cars] 8075 Boulevard 26, North Richland Hills, TX 76180
Dajda's Auto Care

When I lived in Hurst Mike Dajda was my go to mech for my 40 and my 80. He does good work, fair price. He sometimes takes a day or two days longer than he thinks it will take but it always came home fixed right.

The best guy I have found in Fort Worth is Gabriel at GT Pro Services. He will let you bring your own parts which I like because I plan on doing some things myself and then don’t have time.

There is also Mike Dajda in Fort Worth area.
He owns
Dajda Do-Rite
8075 Blvd 26
North Richland Hills, TX 76180
817-427-4857

I have not yet used him personally but I've been to a shop and seen the work that he does and it looks pretty good. He even works on the foreign stuff like BJ43s and things like that. Right now he has 40s, 43s, 60s, 62s and various other ones over there. They are inside the shop, outside the shop in the front, outside the shop in the back
