My expansion tank is up at the ceiling. I'll service it tonight. I bet that's the problem - no air in the tank for expansion.

The safety overflow valve seemed fine.
 
I've been researching mod/con boilers lately and there are two decent forums to try if you need more info -

heatinghelp.com and the boiler section of doityourself.com is actually pretty good on older boiler tech

Finally got around to doing this just now. :o :doh:

My expansion tank is definitely full of water. It's going to be a slow draining process because there is no way to let air into the tank so it will drain. I can't do it with a hose at all, I have to put a bucket under the drain and then jiggle the tank back a forth a bit so it will suck air in through the drain more often. If I let it sit it will only suck air every 15 seconds or so and let out about a tablespoon of water with each burp. :doh:

I'm sure this is the problem though. thanks again :cheers:
