Doug one question, with the antenna full up can you take the lower antenna segments and slide them over the upper ones with abotu 1" of slack?

I wonder if the 96LX got the 97LC antenna?

Hope I'm not hijacking but mine will extract about four inches and then stop. It will retract fine. Would replacing the mast seem necessary for this problem?

This thread had run its course so no real hijack, I don’t think you need a new mast. Just need to reposition the antenna. try using the up and down buttons to get its stopping point higher, press the up button until the antenna stops.

Clean the antenna mast... with it running from the passenger side (so you do not have to run-around back and forth, unless you have an assistant). Run it up as far as it goes. Spray with WD 40 use plenty, run it back down and keep repeating this until it goes up and down at it full length. Wipe clean then use light oil to keep it going.

Raven - too little too late, but I replaced mine last week while on the road (97LX). I unscrewed the washer, pushed the up button to full extension and then gave the antenna a bit of a tug and it came out. The plastic piece was the correct length, so I inserted the new one and pressed the down button.

It took a few cycles of the up and down + radio full off for the antenna to 'calibrate' and extend/retract fully.

Cheers, Hugh

Ok so I was being too easy on it, I was expecting it to drive itself out with only light assistance from me. Then 2 months later it broke, kind of glad I took it apart anyway to get out the piece left the last time it broke.

Raven,

Does this mean that your antenna now does not have any slack at fully extended position?

Mine broke, no need to fix when you go with XM Radio. Just unplug the power from the antenna and your done with FM Radio for good...

nope it still has slack,I think that is by desighn. see post #19.
